I think it is a very pretty girly name. I think it works for a child and an adult. It is sweet for a baby, but will still look professional on a business card later on.

I do not like this name at all. I think of a dirty backwoods girl when I hear this name. Strange I know. I feel like it can only be said with a strong southern drawl.
I should like this name more than I do. It's got everything I normally like ? feminine, lots of Ls and As, long and distinguished history, etc. ? but it just does not grab me.
Maybe it's the spelling. I'm so prejudiced against the letter Y at this point, maybe it's turning me off unnecessarily. I do like Leila much more.
Edited to answer the question you actually asked:
To me, Leila/Layla has two very strong connotations that are totally at odds with one another. All of the Leilas I have known IRL have been Middle Eastern, educated, well-traveled, etc. But at the same time, Layla also sounds very country/rural. Two different associations, but both strong.

I agree with all of this.

I like it and do not think it sounds trashy, country, etc. I do agree with pp that I like Leila just a bit better. I think we're all sick of random y's and even though this is a legit y it still grates on the nerves because of that trend.
I like the name. I don't get the country/backwoods feel like some people mentioned. I am also not opposed to "y's" like many others are. I prefer Layla to Leila on this one.
We had chosen Ayla if our baby was a girl. To me it is a similar vibe, but a little less common than the Kayla/Layla/Jayla's out there, so it was more my style. You could also consider Lila, which is also a nice name that ages well in my opinion.
I live in the South and here it is a very common name right now. I think it sounds pretty, but where I live, the name does have a bit of a trashy vibe to it, so I personally wouldn't use it.

I think it's a pretty name, but it's what we named our dog so we'll never use it. I have a friend with a daughter named Layla (that we met after we already had our dog) and her daughter is super cute!
I like the Clapton song, but I don't care for the name. First of all I'm just tired of the Lily, Lillian, Lila, etc. names, and I group Layla with them. Second of all, I do have a slight trashy/redneck association with it due to someone I know with the name.
I know an adorable little girl named Layla and also a very sharp older woman named Leila. Both are good names in my book, but I prefer Layla on this one. Our beagle's mn is Layla... LOL yes we give our animals middle names.
For some reason, it sounds sexual to me. i don't really know why. Maybe that goes along with the trashy vibe that others are saying they get.
This is exactly what I thought. Maybe because it is similar to "Lola", who was a showgirl?
My husband LOVES this name. He suggested it to me before we were even married. I felt bad telling him I don't like it since all his other suggestions are from video games and sci fi movies and Layla is at least a step up from that!
TTC since June, 2011 with anovulatory PCOS, 1 blocked tube, and mild MFI
3rd cycles clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
4th cycles letrozole/Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
IVF #1 = BFP! Twins due 2/5/2014
I adore both versions of the song (original and unplugged). I like the name enough, although it is NMS, and I think it is very trendy (Layla #33 and Leila #230 on SSA).

I dont get a trashy vibe from this name at all. I think it is beautiful and feminine.
Not trashy. Adorable just the way it is spelled. I also like Lyla.
And I love that the letter "y" is in my own name Dayna

This just reminded me that my dog's name is Lola. LOL. I think that's a bit much. I will stick with Lydia as my frontrunner.
Thanks everyone!

Funny thing is I had originally intended it to be spelled Layla...but we decided last minute and by the time DH filled out the paperwork it was Leila.
