My parents live an hour and a half from me and we go there to visit from time to time because they live near the beach. The hospital closest to them is terrible and the next closest isn't too bad but they do not have a NICU. When would you stop visiting? I was thinking my birthday weekend is around the 20th of July and I will be 34 weeks.
My sister thinks I am being paranoid. If we had to drive back to the hospital, I guess we're only an hour and a half away without traffic but if it were a PTL emergency, I would imagine every minute counts. And who wants to be stuck in traffic in labor?

Re: When would you stop staying away from home?
DH and I married 8 years. Mom of three, stepmom of one.
My family lives 5 hours away and I am going at 37 weeks for my baby shower. I will be taking my toddler 23 month old as well.
When I was pregnant with my son I drove 4 hours away to the Florida Keys and went snorkeling and beaching 3 days before I had him.
In my mind, I would just get into the car if I felt contractions at all. I'm more nervous to leave earlier in the pregnancy then at the end. I can labor in the car initially, it will help pass the time.
(It might help that my dh is a physician and I was a labor nurse.
)
Haha yah I'd say that helps calm your nerves. As a FTM I'm being extra careful and I'd say stick around home. Besides I've heard sitting in a car not being able to switch positions doesn't make contractions fun so although you could drive back it would probably be a long ride if you went into labor. We got invited to a wedding when I'll be 39 weeks (obviously that's way later than your case) and it's 14 hours away so needless to say we'll be skipping that wedding.
yeah if you labor at home for a long time and get into the car, its probably the worst part for many women because of the inability to change postitions, but if you feel a few regular contractions and then get into the car when its still really early ( it might not even be labor). I did this for 12 hours the frist time before they got really intense. I definitely would not go 14 hours away though.
Dh's family planned a camping trip the weekend of July 30th, only 4-5 days before I'm due. It's a 2.5-3 hour drive and we would be camping....so no A/C or mattress. I said hell to the no and they don't understand why I won't consider it.
I would probably stop taking 1.5 hour trips at about 37-38 weeks. Just ask your doctor. One thing to remember is that you should probably stop half way into the trip to get out and stretch your legs and walk around.
This! I had DD at 38weeks 5days so for me, the cutoff point would probably be 38 weeks but most FTM go into labor after their due date so I wouldn't worry about it.
We have a family reunion at a camp ground 3 hours away from my home (and hospital). We're going as long as we get the go ahead from the doctor before (he wrote the date down and will do a cervix check before I leave).
My only issue is having DH stay sober in case I start having contractions and need to leave!

More Green For Less Green
We have nothing planned between now and delivery. Showers are done, family (5 hours away) has been seen for the last time before the kiddo is here.
We were going to drive to St. Louis on July 13 which I'd be 33 weeks, but we've decided to sell the tickets. Favorite band and all, and it would have been a great last trip with some friends, but it would be a 5 hour car ride; after 5 hours to and from our first shower (drove in on Friday night, came home Sunday), I was MISERABLE. My feet and legs were so swollen that it jiggled and felt like jello when I walked! I decided it would really, really not be the best idea at that point.
