Membrane Sweeping?

I'm 40 weeks and 1 day today.  I have a doctor's appointment today at 5:30 pm.  Generally, I'm all for waiting for baby to come on its own.  However, as of June 30th, I lose my wonderful insurance and have to rely on DH's iffy insurance.  What do you all think of asking my doctor to sweep my membranes?  Should I let this little one lie for another week first?

Re: Membrane Sweeping?

  • I say go for it. If it's going to work, it's going to work. I had great success with it for my second and absolutely no success with it for my third.

Typically, there is no harm in trying.

  • Will you be going back in at 41+1 if you're still pregnant?  I would personally wait for that appt.

Good luck and lots of labor/baby dust to you :)

  • if baby is ready its a great way to kick start labor. it worked for me at 39w6d.  I made sure to go home and have sex/ do some walking etc.  some other "labor inducing" techniques.  in my case, baby was ready!

  • I would give it a try. Your doctor may offer it to you at this point without you asking anyway. Good luck!

  • I would do it.   I had mine done at 40 weeks 2 days  and again at 40 weeks 5 days.  It was a bit uncomfortable and neither time put me into labor but I was willing to try it since my OB was pushing for me to be induced during my 41st week.   If you're ready it will help and if your not you'll be a little uncomfortable and have some spotting for a few days.

  • My doctor wasn't there, so I got checked by a midwife.  I mentioned that I was curious about having it done.  She told me my doctor doesn't believe in it, but that she does.  Her exam was VERY rough and painful.  She mentioned that she was "very vigorous" in the exam, so don't be surprised if I get blood and contractions.  They're sending me for an NST tomorrow, but she said I'll probably go into labor in before my next appt (next Thursday).  So I don't know 100% what happened, but if it works, I'm up for it!

  • I would do it, It only works if the baby is ready to come out. I had all my babies in the 38th week. I had it done 3 times with my 1st, and twice with my 2nd, made me cramp a little and did nothing. Had it done once with my 3rd, started cramping right after my appt (around 3pm), and it just got worse and worse as the day went on, then my back started hurting. decided to go to triage at 11pm that night and was 6.5cm (was 4cm at my appt. earlier). Had her the next morning.
