February 2012 Moms

Normal for 3 1/2 month old, or should I call the dr?

DH thinks we should call but I think she's fine and both our mothers think so too.

Over the last few days, Olivia goes from zero to cranky and we can't figure out why.  She's definitely not napping or sleeping as much at night.  Yesterday, she woke up from a nap screaming like something was killing her.  It was scary.  My mom fed her and she calmed down, but was visibly shaking for about 5 minutes.  She's whiny and on the verge of tears unless we're holding her and that is not working much anymore.  She was just sleeping in the swing for an hour and now all of sudden she's up and whining, but she ate two hours, she has no wet diaper or other issues that we can figure out.  She's just crying out for no reason we can see.

She's been stuffy for a few days and we've been using saline swabs and the aspirator and running the humidifier, but she still sounds a little stuffy at times.  She coughs every so often, but it does not sound like chest congestion.

Yesterday, she briefly had a red irritated looking splotch on the back of her neck and she has a slight fever.  I put some lotion on the splotch and put her down under the ceiling fan and the fever went down within minutes and the splotch gradually went away.  I think my mom was hot when holding her and the splotch was from the velcro on her bib, but DH thinks it may have been something serious.  This morning I noticed her right cheek is very red, also looks irritated.  It faded a little during the day but still red. I put lotion on it.  I think it may have been from rubbing on the sheets on our bed this morning, since she was squirming, DH thinks is a pattern of something wrong.

Does she just have a cold maybe? Is it teething?  Is it the onset of this wakeful period?  I feel like if I call the drs, I only have all these random "symptoms" to tell them, and nothing on its own that seems very serious.  Are my motherly instincts just out of whack?

  • sounds normal to me. sometimes teething babies get red cheeks. DS also gets hot like he might have a fever if he has worked himself up screaming. If I put him under the fan, he is fine in a few minutes. the only other thing I could think of would be a possible ear infection.

DS was screaming his head off a lot two weeks ago and I thought it was just teething/cranky. I called SIL (who is a Dr) and she said he was screaming "abnormally" a lot for just teething and I should have him checked for an ear infection. So I went to the Dr. Nothing at all wrong with him. Teething and just likes to scream...

  • My son was a complete maniac when he went through his last growth spurt/wakeful period.  It was terrible!!!  I bet that is exactly what's going on with her.  I was so relieved when my happy baby came back a few weeks ago!  I know it's tough but hang in there, it won't last forever!!

  • DD is going through something similar. She's really "off", cries, screams, fusses etc a lot. If you try everything else to soothe her and nothing works offer food. Today I feed DD like barely even 1.5 hours ago but she was inconsolable. Diapers okay, soothed, distracted, walked bounced and nothing. Bottle? Score! Growth spurts make them funny and hungry so offer and don't go by the thought that it's too soon to feed again. If LO wants it they need it. Good luck getting through this spurt, I'm right there in the trenches with you.
