Where are my NJ peeps?

If you have always lived in NJ do you know how to pump gas? DH recently bought a car that only takes diesel and I was telling a few friends at work that a lot of gas stations the diesel fuel is self service and I don't know how to pump gas so if I drive his car I will have to learn. They were shocked that I didn't know how to pump gas. I don't get why- I have lived in NJ my entire life and never drive far outside of NJ where I needed to get gas there. Am I really a minority in this state? LOL

Re: Where are my NJ peeps?

  • hells no I don't pump gas! When we go on road trips I wake up DH and he does it for me. :) If I was alone I'd be totally screwed.

  • Wait, you don't know how to put gas in a car at all?  As in, you literally have never done it yourself?

Well I don't know about the OP, but I literally never have. Ever. I'msure I could if I like, got out of the car and looked. But I've never had to.

Yes, it's true. In NJ gas stations are full service.

  • Ha-ha, the only time I've pumped gas is when I was in college because I went to school in NY.  I wonder if I still know how to.  There's one plus for NJ - cheaper gas than the rest of the country and you don't do it yourself.

Where in NJ do you live?

I pumped my own gas this winter when I was in upstate NY. The sense of accomplishment I felt afterward, rivaled getting a college diploma haha.

  • Once in Florida I sat out by the pump laying on the horn before I remembered that other states have to pump their own gas. I'm sitting out there like an a hole going, 'Come ON! This is the worst service EVER!"

And yeah, it's ridiculous how cool you feel pumping your own gas. I make people take pictures of me to commemorate the moment.

  • well I am from NJ but I live in FL now where we put our own gas.  IT is very easy to be honest.  You just follow what it says on the screen.  Not a big deal at all.  I thought no gas was self service up there but I never had a diesel car.  I had no clue how to when I moved to florida and even then noone had to show me...I figured it out :)

    Manahawkin right near LBI :)

  • I have done it and I know how, but I prefer not to if at all possible.  The first time I had to do it, I was really young. I was so embarrassed but I had to ask the clerk inside to help me.

  • I grew up in NJ and never pumped gas until I went to college down south. Now that we live in Florida, I'm use to doing it myself.

  • I've never pumped and hope I never have to otherwise hubby will be doing it, but he was saying something that Jersey might be joining the bandwagon and I hope its not true

Lavallette/Seaside Park represent! My kid saw his first drug deal last weekend on the Seaside heights boardwalk.

PS - I had no idea you had to pump deisel yourself. My dad has a deisel truck and I don't think he's ever had to pump.

I have never been to Lavallette, but Seaside Heights.  Oh, what...fun?  My SIL had my nephew's birthday party there last summer on the funtime pier (is that what it's called?) because BIL best friend is the General Manager.  Anyway, I found it to be an interesting venue for a 3 year old's birthday party.  Especially with the Snooki siting and the idiocy that ensued with that.

  • Yeah, seaside heights is a very special place. I know it's gross, but I love the boardwalk. The people watching there is unlike any other. And I went there a lot as a kid, so I have lots of memories. A lot of the stuff is still there too. It's like a time warp.
  • I live in NY now, but grew up in Jersey. Luckily we live right over the NJ border bc I rarely ever have pumped my own gas. It takes me forever to do it myself bc I dont knwo what I'm doing.
  • Can I just say that this thread amuses me?  Where I am we don't have full-serve hardly anywhere anymore, but where there is there is always a full-serve or self-serve option and full-serve is a couple cents more so everybody always takes the self-serve option.  I'm always lost as to what to do when I go to a full-serve!

I <3 Sleaside. I had an unforgettable time at my bachelorette party at Bamboo. The cops are tough there, our red plastic cup drinks cost us $200 each that night.

LMAO! I grew up in Toms River so Seaside is my old stomping grounds. I have spent many a late night at Bamboo, Sawmill, etc and bar crawls on the boardwalk was always a favorite thing to do! LOL

  • I live in Toms River--born and grew up in here :) I went away for college, but that was it :)

Anyway, nope don't know how to pump gas--I mean, I guess I could---if I took the time to learn--but never had too.

It is a great time. Their long island iced tea should be in the guiness world records book. I've never seen a drink served in a fish bowl with a rubber alligator garnish before Bamboo :)

  • I have done it before, but since it is illegal to pump your own gas in NJ, it's not often that I get the chance to.
  • Yes, because I moved out of the state and lived around the northeast for 10 years. Every time my parents would visit, they would make DH or myself pump their gas. it amused me.

  • I think diesel is also full service as it is illegal to pump your own gas. After I got my license when I was a teen, I went to visit my brother in RI by myself. I filed up in Jersey and by the time I was ready to go home my tank was empty. I made my brother come with me to the gas station and full my tank up because ihad never done it before My husband works in NY and CT he makes sure to fill up before leaving because #1 gas is more expensive in both states and #2 WTF is up with pumping your own gas?!? We live in civilization dammit! Pump fists not gas!!!
  • I've lived in NJ my whole life but have had to figure out how to pump my own a few times. DH lived in PA when I met him.  I was going out to his place once and needed gas....pulled up the the pump, sat there, wondered why no one was coming. I finally realized I had to pump my own and panicked and called DH and told him to tell me what to do before I even got out of the car lol.

We're moving to PA in a couple months and I just realized I'll have to pump my own, ugh!

  • I'm in NJ but from NY. Years ago I worked a gas station in NY & it was always fun to get the NJ drivers who could't figure out how to pump gas.

I have always hatted pumping gas. Love living in NJ. However, sometimes I wish I could just get out & do it because some people take too long to get back to me. I like being able to pump & go.

  • I didn't learn to pump my own gas until I was 23 and drove cross country. I definitely waited at a gas station getting really pissed that the dude didn't come out. Til I realized they don't do that everywhere. Doh!

Not all stations are full service for diesel only though. DH got gas the other day and had to self-serve. He asked another guy there if it was typical for diesel and the guy said about half the stations that have diesel are self- serve (in our area). Not even allsaations have diesel fuel.
