Anyone taking anything to help sleep?

I have not been able to get comfortable or get a good stretch of sleep in for weeks now.  I feel exhausted when I get in bed to sleep and then I toss and turn for hours and am wide awake.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I am not taking anything even though I have insomnia, but I believe you can take ambien when you are pregnant.  Don't quote me on that, but I am pretty sure a friend used it while pg, and it was prescribed by her OB.

  • I have this exact problem.  Sad  I went to my OB appt today and asked about it and she says we can take benadryl or tylenol pm.  I have been taking regular tylenol and while it helps a bit, it hasn't fixed the problem.  It's hormones, they suck.

  • I take Benadryl from time to time, usually just a half dose (makes me feel only half as guilty).

Regular Tylenol won't help because it doesn't have the sleep-inducing active ingredient that Tylenol PM has.

Well regular Tylenol helps me sleep better, it at least helps me relax more.  Unisom works too, it has the same ingredient as benadryl and Tylenol PM.

  • I take Unisom occasionally when I really need a good night's sleep. My doctor also gave me the thumbs up for Benadryl.

  • I take benadryl at night when my allergies act up and I sleep better with it every time.  It's safe for pregnancy, so you might try it.

  • I have a hard time going to sleep but can pretty much stay asleep other than pee breaks. I take unisom. Dr told me I can take it when I had MS in 1st and 2nd tri. I don't take it all the time and most the time I take half a tab. It definitely helps.

  • Tylenol PM or Simply Sleep (which is the PM part of Tylenol PM).  I also realized I was really suffering from some weird heartburn that was keeping me up so a pepcid also helped in my case.  But I still plan to ask for Ambien.

Well regular Tylenol helps me sleep better, it at least helps me relax more.  Unisom works too, it has the same ingredient as benadryl and Tylenol PM.

Unisom does NOT have the same ingredient as benedryl and Tylenol PM. Tylenol PM HAS benedryl in it, so if you don't want to overload on medicine and are only looking to sleep better and you're not in pain for any reason, take benedryl. If you're in pain and need to sleep, take Tylenol PM. If you want something that works better than benedryl, take Unisom. That's just my opinion, though. Benedryl works for crud for me.

    Unisom-Doxylamine

    Benedryl-diphenhydramine

    Tylenol-acetaminophen

    Tylenol PM-acetaminophen and diphenhydramine.

    Tylenol PM-acetaminophen and diphenhydramine.

Be very careful which Unisom product you choose! SOME of the Unisom products (the sleep gels and sleep melts) DO contain the same ingredient as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) where as the sleep tabs contain doxylamine. So it just depends on which formula you choose.  I'd personally stick to the benadryl 25mg 1-2 before bedtime if you have trouble sleeping or Tylenol PM if you are dealing with any aches/pains that could be keeping you awake. (FWIW: I'm a Family Nurse Practitioner).

I have insomnia and was an ambien user prior to my pregnancy. My specialist and OB both said it was NOT proven safe during pregnancy. There weren't any studies showing it was harmful but there weren't any saying it isn't either. That was enough for me to quit taking it immediately. It hasn't been easy but benedryl and unisom help.
