Dairy Intolerance

Has anyone else's LO been diagnosed with a milk intolerance? We went to the pedi this morning and now I have to eliminate dairy from my diet (he's EBF) and see if it clears up for him. Wondering if anyone else has had this and how long it took for your LO to be free of symptoms (he has small amounts of blood in his stool). Also, what did you eat? I know that I can eat plenty but all I can seem to think of are the things I can't eat! Lol I'm from WI and love cheese...I'd do anything for my little guy though...just need to make sure I don't starve. :)

Re: Dairy Intolerance

  • My god-daughter had this. I think it was about a year before she was symptom-free.

I had a lactose issue in my early 20s, so I was off dairy for a year ? it's not fun, but it's doable (even now, I limit myself to only several small diary servings a day). You can still do but meals, just knock off the cheese (or other dairy). Yes, tacos with no cheese is depressing at first, but you'll get used to it.

    Other meals:

    - Stir fry or other Chinese/Japanese/Thai foods

    - Burgers or hot dogs or something else on the grill with french fries

    - Steak/meatloaf/pot roast/turkey with potato

    - Spaghetti and meatballs

    - Sandwiches sans cheese

    - Beef or mushorrom tortelinni or ravioli

    - Taco soup (once colder)

    I hope those ideas help.

Also, right now ? are you eating full on dairy (non-reduced fat milk, cheese, sour cream, etc)? I found that my dairy tolerance slowly built up once I switched to the least fattiest forms of dairy. So, you could always try that.

  • I'm sorry for you!  I did this when DS was 2 weeks because he was so fussy and the pedi suggested it.  She said it takes 3 weeks for dairy to come completely out of your system, so if you're going to try it to see if it's a dairy intolerance, you really have to stick to it for at least that long to see full results. Thankfully, my baby was just a crab and grew out of it.

I tried soy, almond and whey milk, but whey milk was really gross and the other two very tolerable.  Cheese was the hard thing, though! I just replaced my cheese intake with other protein like a slice of lunch meat or trail mix for a snack. I wanted pizza sooo bad! It's tough, but very doable and worth it!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm already missing cheese, haha, and I haven't even eaten lunch yet! :) I have always done the low fat or fat free forms of dairy so that's not an issue. Has anyone ever had smoothies with soy milk? Smoothies are also a favorite of mine and I just realized they are made with milk/yogurt! Lol it's definitely one of those cases of wanting something just because you were told you can't have it! Lol

You can get lactose-free yogurt to make smoothies with!  Or vanilla soy milk is pretty darn good.

  • Same thing I posted on the other board...

I did, and it worked.  I didn't cut out ALL dairy, I just didn't eat the obvious. No glass of milk with dinner, no yogurt, no cereal, no ice cream, etc.  I would still eat things with cheese and baked items that had milk.

It worked and I'm slowly adding it back in my diet but I'm careful to not over-do it.

As for my freezer stash, I went back and marked all of the bags that I had with dairy with a big black X. Then my baby sitter would make sure to mix the "bad" milk with good milk.

Good luck! Hopefully just reducing the obvious diary will work for you like it did for me!

Is it a milk protein allergy or a lactose intolerance?  They are different.  Babies with lactose intolerance (system can't handle the sugars in dairy) are often just fine with soy, whether consumed by their EBFing mom or as formula.  My son has a milk protein allergy, meaning that he has an allergic reaction (including gastrointestinal irritation resulting in extremely bloody diarrhea) to the shape of the proteins in dairy.  Because soy proteins are similar in shape, switching to soy doesn't usually help babies with a milk protein allergy as it does those with a lactose intolerance. He is now on an amino acid-based formula, Elecare, in which the milk proteins are completely broken down (hydrolyzed) into their component amino acids (which his system can handle).  Had I been breastfeeding, it would have been absolutely no dairy for me for the duration.  Milk protein allergy is often something babies outgrow, so we'll try cow's milk at a year and see what happens.

If it's a lactose intolerance, cheese is probably off the table for now, but there are lots of good soy based "faux dairy" products out there.  I know that many women whose babies have a lactose intolerance are often able to clean their system of dairy for a period of time then slowly reintroduce dairy to their diets.  Often, this "reset" eliminates their babies' reaction to the lactose.

    GL!

Thanks! I probably confused people with my title, but the pedi thinks it's a lactose intolerance and to eliminate all dairy. He also mentioned that eventually I could start to bring it back into my diet slowly, but for now it's all gone. :) I'm definitely looking into the faux dairy products! Thanks!!
