I was looking at the GTKY/Roll call thread and I am wondering why so many of you are afraid to give out your first name?

Me thinks some of you watch too much dateline.

Some of us have been around a really long time and seen some pretty messed up stuff on these boards. One of the most notable instances was on one of the Nest boards where a girl was tracked down and stalked at work. Just like I don't post pictures... if you're not careful, IP addresses can be tracked.

Unfortunately, this stuff does happen on these boards, it's not just on Dateline. And if I'm going to be labeled as too paranoid, then so be it. I'm not openly putting my info out there for the world to see. Just like I'm not searchable on FB, I don't have pictures posted for the general public (everything is password protected and invite only)... I just don't want to deal with the what ifs.

I haven't been around for decades but for a good 4 years. All of the stuff that I have seen that was like "HOLY SCHNIKES" came from people who were frequent posters who always stirred the pot/picked on others, etc. I have never seen something happen without extensive history. And a first name isn't like giving out your ss number. So, Yes, I think some of you are super freakin' paranoid. And it feels weird.

I don't see the big deal of why you care.

If people choose to be "super freakin paranoid" then so be it. I think it's stalkerish to push people for their info.

Personally for me--- I don't think not revealing my name is going to save me. But it would seem creepy if someone I don't know started referring to me by name. I guess I just find it unnecessary.

I agree with you haleymay. Giving out your first name isn't the end of the world.

I guess I get it if their name is super unique. But if your name is something like ... I don't know.. Jennifer or something and you're from Chicago - there's a ton of those in Chicago.

To answer your question OP, I am very relaxed with names (other than last time), sometimes I use A, sometimes Allison, sometimes E, sometimes Ethan. I think I answered A in the GTKY post because I was bumping from my phone in the car and was trying to save time responding.

ETA: bumping, not pumping. although i do a lot of the latter in the car as well.

I just perfer to remain as anonymous as possible on the internet. I think that if someone saw my name, and my child's name, and a few other random identifying details it wouldn't be difficult to figure out who I am. I prefer my privacy.

I personally think people like hiding behind a screen name so they aren't accountable for anything they say. It's like...don't flatter yourself. I don't care enough about you to track you down and show up at your work. Except for haleymay but she kind of likes me lurking in her bushes.
