My son is almost 11months and the only thing he will say is dada. I have been talking to him non-stop and read to him all day. I just dont understand.... I know that he understands me most of the time like..... no.... in.... out.... up...... open..... close....ect. But I can't get him to say anything

11 months?   too early to worry.   My older son was in early intervention for a speech delay because at 15 months he still hadn't said his first word.   He barely qualified for services.

Just keep talking to him and reading to him and it will come.  It sounds like his receptive language is great since you say he understands you.

    Good luck!

  • My son is also 11mo old and he is not really saying any real words..I talked to his doctor about it ( was there for something else) and he said there is nothing to worry about as long as he understands us ( responds to his name, stops when you say NO,and points at things). He said that these things mean that he understand you.

His doctor said that some babies are more advance in motor skills and some are more  verbal. I think he might be right, perfect excample : My friend had her girl few days before I had my baby, she is saying mom, dad, no, more etc..but she is not even crawling. When my crazy son has been crawling since 6mo, and walking since 9 mo. Its so funny seeing the two babies together, you can never tell they are the same age, she is sitting there calling her mom and mine is getting up and down the couch and running around.

Im a FTM too, dont worry, every baby is different and will do things on their own time.

  • I don't even understand this post.  A quick google search would tell you that it is too early for your kid to be talking (or at least 100% normal that he isn't).

  • Mine babbles, but I'm not sure she understands me.  She responds when I point to something, but I doubt she understands yes or no.  I wish I could get her to stop squirming when I'm trying to change her.

  • At least do a google search on developmental milestones before worrying! :) If I were you I'd be bragging about that one word at 11 months!!

  •  Wow.  Ya... no need to worry.  My son is 11 months and says Dada and Mama.  That's it for now.  My daughter really started to be coherent at about 18 months (she did words before that, but actually started "talking" by 18 months).  No need to worry.  Keep reading and talking to him and he'll be fine!

  • My son wasn't really talking until well after 2. Relax.

  • I understand your thinking. You see or hear of another baby talking, saying words etc and you start to wonder. My 11 month old has not said a word yet. Lots of babbling and receptive language. I have friends that are speech pathologists and they tell me its too early too. If he/she isnt babbling by 12 mos. then you can question things.
