how much BM to take to daycare?

I am sending DD to daycare tomorrow for the first time...(already have been tears...dreading this.) and I am not sure how much BM to send?  Do I send it frozen?  I know I can ask them tomorrow but I wanted to know what to bring on the first day at least...

Re: how much BM to take to daycare?

  • I have worked in an infant room when I was in college. I would suggest you calculate how long the baby will be there and how often she drinks. So if she is there for 8 hours, and drinks every 3 bring three bottles maybe 4 incase you are running late or something happens to one of the bottles. Make sure the bottles have the babys initials on them. Your best bet is to use a Sharpie. Make sure everything has initials including label in clothes.

  • Do i bring bottles for each feeding???  Or can i bring one and 4 bags of milk
    ??

  • I prepare my bottles ahead of time. 1 bottle for each feeding ... they don't wash bottles there. She is there from 7:45-4:15 and drinks 3 bottles, but i always send 4. I bought preprinted labels that last through washing in dishwasher and washing machine.

  • Most  child care centers dont have limits on feeding babies breast milk however, they want the bottles already made and ready to heat. Also remind the provider how you heat the bottles. I heat my bm by heating water in the microwave till boiling then dropping the bottle in it until it has reached the temp my LO likes. However, if you have a bottle warmer, bring it and have them use that. Parents do things different ways and it's important you let them know how you want things done and make sure they can help you.

  • LO is there for 10 hours. I bring 4-4 oz bottles of BM for her which she finishes them all. Then I have an extra bottle and formula there just in case.

  • I currently work in the infant room at a DC. Bring a bottle for each feeding. Their water should only go to 120degrees, which isn't hot enough to properly wash a bottle.

Ask if they'll take frozen BM. We do. I have a mom who has a huge stash in our freezer (at least a month). We use a crockpot to properly heat the milk and then we pour it into a bottle that she brought. I have another mom who fills her bottles at home and then just puts them in our refrigerator and we just heat as we need. But having a few frozen bags is always good in case you're running late. Just throw some extra bottles in her cubby. It's all about what the DC likes and what's easier for you.

  • I have always sent 4 filled bottles for both kids and left an extra empty bottle in the cubby in case it was needed. DS ate every 2-2.5 hours and took 3-4 oz. DD takes about 3.5 oz and uses two bottles she eats every 3-4 hours. There were two days she used 3 bottles but that's because our bottles suck in the bottle warmer.  We told them with both children that they take it straight from the fridge so they don't bother warming hers up.  www.inchbug.com was all the rage when DS was in that room 2 short years ago but it seems the only two that have them are DD and a baby who is one month older. I think that's because they are second children (the other's sib is 4 months older than DS and they have been in the same room unless its time for her to transition.  They told me I could keept a freezer bag there if needed since she's still new to taking bottles (tomorrow is 4 weeks since I have returned to work...that's mighty sad to think that). They can thaw the bag and put it in a clean empty bottle (kept in her cubby) but they can't fill her bottles themselves. If you send a frozen bag, don't send one that has more than she eats at a single feeding, it will get tossed. Has she done bottles before? I would just add an extra 1/2 oz to what she typically takes from the bottle. If you haven't done bottles and have spare milk pumped, I would send 4-5 oz in 4 bottles and see what she takes. If you notice one bottles is consistantly higher than others, just mark the order they should be in, as in 1-4 and fill that one feeding higher.
