Natural Birth

Need help inducing at home so I can have a natural birth

Due to medical reasons I am not going be allowed to go more than 2 days longer than my due date. My baby is a big boy and I'm a bit heavy. I have really hoped to do a natural birth but if they induce me they are almost positive I will have to have a C-section. I am eating pineapple and egg plant I went out and got an excersize ball to sit on. I try nipple stimulation at night and DH has been pitching in when he can but my pelvis is shear agony so thats kind of hard. If you wonderful ladies could give me any other suggestions I'd love it.

Re: Need help inducing at home so I can have a natural birth

  • I was looking at an induction on Monday morning.   I did accupunture Friday noon and did castor oil that night.   I delivered her Saturday morning.   I actually went into labor 12 hours after the accupunture which was the time frame the practitioner gave me.   She did schedule me for the next day but I didn't need it.   I would reccomend doing trying it.   The castor oil may have helped but it did give me loose stools and that would be my last choice to try.

FYI I'm also overweight and had a big baby 9 lbs 3 oz.   My Ob wanted to induce at 41 weeks, but set the induction for 41 wks 5 days.   I delivered her at 41 wks 3 days.   If nothing else is wrong with you, I would push for a later date.

  • I actually accidentally wandered onto this board, trying to go over to the multiples board, but your post caught my eye... A friend of mine who did natural birth was two days away from what would have been her induction date, and her DH suggested she try doing some moderate weight lifting and strength training one morning instead of just going for her usual walk. I believe she said she did 60second planks, pushups, squats with weights and chest presses with weights. She used as much weight as she could stand. It worked, she went into labor that night and delivered her DD the following afternoon.

  • Thanks I do have a medical issue which is why I cannot go later. I have a gall bladder that is very bad and in desparate need of removal however I had 5 early term losses so the surgeon wont touch me until after I give birth. Right now they have me on 5 prescriptions to maintain myself until I do go into labor. I will give the acupunture a try though :)

  • Nipple stimulation did absolute wonders for me.

Also, are you eating fresh pineapple? And have you eaten the core? Canned pineapple doesn't work as well (from what I read) so if that's what you're eating, I suggest hitting the fresh produce eye and getting the real thing.

    Good luck!

  • If you can get your hands on it Henci Goer's The Thinking Woman's Guide for a Better Birth has a chapter on induction and she discusses the pros and cons of each method.   She does talk about both accupunture and castor oil in the Chapter.   She also has the citations and summarizes the studies where she got her information from.
  • Dh and I had lots of sex :) Try the spoon position, it's the only way I could get comfy. GL mama

  • Walk, walk, WALK. I probably walked 3-5 miles a day, everyday once I hit 39 weeks. I'm sure I was a sight to behold: 39 weeks pregnant and lumbering along on the treadmill in my DH's workout clothes. BUT it worked and I went into labor on my due date; I have no proof but both my mom and sister were overdue and I managed to avoid that.

  • My doula told me to crawl around on my hands and knees for as long as I could stand it (I made it about an hour). 6 hours later I woke up in active labor. Might be worth a try!

  • I've heard swimming with a kickboard is good for pelvis movement and getting the baby into position.

Our Bradley teacher strongly suggested this as well.

  • I was super eager to get things on the road so I tried A LOT. Here's what I did: red raspberry leaf tea, spicy foods, LOTS of walking (maybe 3 miles a day in 1 mile increments), sitting on yoga ball, squats, evening primrose oil, and LOTS of sex (making sure both DH and I... uhum finished). I did that from 37 weeks and on. I ate spicy bean curd Chinese food right before I started having contractions, but I'm not sure that's what did it (although DH and joke about it all the time). I have a feeling all the sex is what did it.

Anyway, I had my son at 39w1d and had mild contraction for about 10 hours before actually going into the hospital. And I was 7 cm dilated when I went in! I think the prostaglandins from sex is what helped. So long story short, I suggest sex :-p
