    Just for fun

    1) What are you planning your first drink to be after baby?
I really want either a really great bellini or white wine sangria

    2) When are you planning on having your first drink?
I'm not entirely sure. I'm going to be breastfeeding so it won't be alot. I might have a sip here or there in the beginning. But as for full drink maybe a month or two?

  • I'm not sure what it will be. Perhaps Martini Asti? I do know that I will have a celebratory drink the day I come home from the hospital.

  • 1 - a nice cold Stella Artois

2 - probably my first dinner at home (won't drink a full one since I'll be BF'ing, but a half glass will be amazing anyway)

  • Champs!  DH bought a super nice bottle and it is chillin' in the fridge.  He is going to sneak it into the hospital.

  • Depending on if I stick to breastfeeding or not, I want my first drink to be a strawberry mojito :)

  • I already had my first drink... twice  :)   I just pumped and dumped since DS is in the NICU and I didn't want to risk any alcohol in the milk.

    It was a Sauvignon Blanc.

  • STRAWBERRY MARGARITA!! On my deck in the warm sun!!

I might stick to a few sips of beer to help my milk come in when I come home from the hospital, and indulge in my margarita within the first week or two.

  • Margarita sounds awesome. Here is something to add:

Dr. Jack Newman, member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council, says this in his handout "More Breastfeeding Myths":

Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.

Thomas W. Hale, R.Ph. Ph.D., member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council, says this in his book Medications and Mothers' Milk (12th ed.):

Significant amounts of alcohol are secreted into breastmilk although it is not considered harmful to the infant if the amount and duration are limited. The absolute amount of alcohol transferred into milk is generally low. Beer, but not ethanol, has been reported in a number of studies to stimulate prolactin levels and breastmilk production (1, 2, 3). Thus it is presumed that the polysaccharide from barley may be the prolactin-stimulating component of beer (4). Non-alcoholic beer is equally effective.

In a study of twelve breastfeeding mothers who ingested 0.3 g/kg of ethanol in orange juice (equivalent to 1 can of beer for the average-sized woman), the mean maximum concentration of ethanol in milk was 320 mg/L (5). This report suggests a 23% reduction (156 to 120 mL) in breastmilk production following ingestion of beer and an increase in milk odor as a function of ethanol content.

Excess levels may lead to drowsiness, deep sleep, weakness, and decreased linear growth in the infant. Maternal blood alcohol levels must attain 300 mg/dl before significant side effects are reported in the infant. Reduction of letdown is apparently dose-dependent and requires alcohol consumption of 1.5 to 1.9 gm/kg body weight (6). Other studies have suggested psychomotor delay in infants of moderate drinkers (2+ drinks daily). Avoid breastfeeding during and for 2 - 3 hours after drinking alcohol.

In an interesting study of the effect of alcohol on milk ingestion by infants, the rate of milk consumption by infants during the 4 hours immediately after exposure to alcohol (0.3 g/kg) in 12 mothers was significantly less (7). Compensatory increases in intake were then observed during the 8 - 16 hours after exposure when mothers refrained from drinking.

Adult metabolism of alcohol is approximately 1 ounce in 3 hours, so mothers who ingest alcohol in moderate amounts can generally return to breastfeeding as soon as they feel neurologically normal. Chronic or heavy consumers of alcohol should not breastfeed.

  • I am really looking forward to having a beer and I'm thinking maybe Guiness, but I'd say yes to probably any kind.

I do plan on bf'ing so I'll be only having a moderate amount.

  • I am by no means an alcoholic but dang I've been craving alcohol.  I think my first drink my be those new bud light lime wine-a-rita.  Had a sip last weekend and it was oh so good.  I would like to breastfeed so I'll have to limit my consumption but didn't I read or hear somewhere that beer can help milk production?>!

I'm obsessed with pinterest and the endless yummy drink recipes.  Check out one for Summer beer- it contains vodka, pink lemonade, and beer and looks quite refreshing.  Summer in Texas is crazy hot and I still have 17 days until my due date :/

  • 1) What are you planning your first drink to be after baby? Malibu + pineapple juice

    2) When are you planning on having your first drink? Very soon, lol. I haven't had a drink in over 2 years.

  • I'm hoping for a very cold Anchor Steam, or at least half of one, following completion of delivery.
  • Since DH is currently in the process of opening a brewery, I will probably drink a beer he has made! I've sipped a few, but I'm ready for a whole one all to myself! I think it will an alt beer :)

  • Champagne! My husband will be packing it in my bag for the hospital. :) Just a celebratory sip for me and the rest for my family! :)
  • Our hospital provided a little bottle of champagne. H and I toasted on the night DS was born. :)

  • A nice dark beer as soon as I get home from the hospital :)  Dark beer is good for your milk supply.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • This is an excellent question!  Hard to decide though.  My husband and I have some "Spotted Cow " (a WI beer) we've been saving for after the baby is here, so maybe one of those.  Sangria or a bellini also sounds amazing.  A bloody mary.  Malibu and pineapple or malibu and diet.  Arizona Peach Ale from a brewery down here.

I'll be BFing so it will be awhile before I have more than a quarter or a half a drink, but when I do I fully expect it to be amazing!
