Gender disappointment poll

Has anyone expressed disappointment to you about the sex of your child?

I really am wtf'ing all these recent posts. Not the posters, but their families. What is wrong with people???

Re: Gender disappointment poll

  • No one has said anything to me. It is the first grandchild on each side. Some people at work have asked if DH was disappointed and I just replied "why would he be?" and they backed down. Hahahaha.

  • No one has even hinted at any kind of disappointment for either of our children's sex's. It boggles my mind that some people do.

  • I don't get it either! You'd think people would want a healthy baby for the couple . But my ignorant fil was like that with dd it was ridiculous.

  • Yep!  FIL said something along the lines of "well, there will be more babies to carry on the name" when we told him it was a girl.

BIL has a little boy.  He said something to my husband about him having stronger chromosomes than him because he was able to produce a boy.  Apparently he doesn't understand anything about genetics considering the male passes on either a Y or an X to the females' X.    Not really a gender disappointment but an odd reaction.

  • It was very clear that DH's family wanted our first or my SIL's 3rd  to be a girl. We were pregnant at the same time, and she had 2 boys already. SIL's 3rd ended up being a girl, but I feel that for the week we knew and she didn't there was disappointment that DS was a boy. Nothing was said but reactions were pretty..... blah from them.

This time, I don't think anyone had a preference at all. I was torn both times on what I preferred, which was ideal. My motherly instinct on sex sucks though because I was sure DS was a girl and sure this one was a boy...

  • Oh yeah! Even perfect strangers act disappointed or at least as if I should be disappointed when they see me with my two boys and then I tell them this LO is a boy also. I actually didn't tell anyone the sex for a while to not have to deal with it. When I told my little sister, 22, she responded with a text saying "Awww I was hoping for a girl, but ok.". Seriously WTH?!?!

  • No disappointment from us, and none from family as far as I can tell.
  • Yeah my MIL was a psycho.  When she found out we were having a boy for #1, she kept sending us girl clothes and bows and stuff.  Such a crazy wench!!!

  • DH was slightly disappointed about having another girl but nothing serious.  It was initial and over in no time.

But I agree that there are ridiculous people out there.

    I am seriously lol here.

Also another odd thing: crazy gender disappointment seems about equally split boy/girl. So I guess we've come a long way for equality :)

I am sorry this made me laugh really hard....not at you but you MIL like buying you girl things would change the sex of the baby ....some ppl

We were hoping number one for healthy and number two for a boy but as long as it was healthy we would take either. It is a girl which I immediatley was alright with because all measurements and baby look great and healthy. DH had to take a little time he was happy she was healthy but was really hoping for a boy. He is the last one to carry on his family name is this will be more then likely our last one. He is super excited to have to daddys girls now.....however some of the comments that I recieved I just wanted to slap the ppl

  • Not family but sadly DH was/is disappointed it's a girl. He has withdrawn from the pregnancy almost all together. Which is the complete opposite of how he was with DS. It sucks and really frustrates me to no end. He made a comment right after the A/S where we found out that we will definitely be having another one because he wants a boy.

Our situation is a little different though and I am trying to have some understanding with him.

I am really sorry. This must be very difficult. Maybe therapy could help if it doesn't get better?

  • Neither time, and this is our second girl.  My SIL had two boys and she got a lot of "oh will you try for a third?" not exactly gender disappointment, but people seemed to think she would be a bit disappointed.

Thank you. Therapy will definitely be on the cards if after she comes he doesn't change. He is a wonderful father and I hope he will come around.

    Totally agree.

Well, no, but we've not quite announced yet. I think I'd get a few comments if I was having two boys. And if that happened I'd be setting them straight pretty quickly.

  • My MIL hasn't expressed disappointment, per se, but is having a hard time believing that it's a girl.  She was so convinced it was a boy, and still thinks the dr made a mistake!

  • Dh was a little sad but I knew he would be because it brings up complicated feelings from SS who he had when he was 20 as a random/party induced encounter. I knew he would immediately compare the two situations because he has felt SS should have been placed with a loving, ready family when he was younger. It just brought back a lot of those memories and questions.

Hes over it though and dad to two sons now. I wouldn't have it any other way and neither SS or this baby will be treated any differently at all.

Anyone else has (for the most part) kept their opinions to themselves.

  • My sister has two sons so naturally everyone in the family wanted me to have the first girl when we all found out I was expecting.

It's a boy! lol, nobody was devestated. Just another little guy to run around nanny and papaw's house!

  • No disappointment here, but I find it annoying when people make "perfect family" remarks or "you can stop now" remarks.  IMO, we'd have a perfect family if we had another boy, or if we had all girls, too.  The "you can stop now" thing is really annoying.

  • MIL keeps saying that their family doesn't have girls...but obviously they do since we are expecting a little girl.  She says stupid inconsiderate things all the time though.

Yeah, there's two girls and three boy cousins on DH's side of the family.  DH's mom is REALLY really wanting a girl.  I think she askes me every time I see her if I think it's a girl.  Which is part of why we decided to be team green.  Even if we weren't team green I think we'd keep it a secret just to drive her crazy for another 4 months!

On my side of the family there's one girl and three boy cousins.  No one has said anything about being disappointed if it's a boy, but I have had several comments about evening things out.  In the end I think everyone will be happy as long as baby is healthy.

  • Yep I had posted my MIL said "Awww, I was hoping for a girl."  Whatever....

Unfortunately I have to see her tomorrow and if she says anything to my face I may just scream...

  • My grandmother was very disappointed it was a girl.  She actually said "god damn it" when I told her and then went on to ask how disappointed my mother was.

My MIL has not expressed any disappointment but I'm sure she is, all she talked about since the moment we got PG was how she hoped it was a boy, she was praying every night it was a boy, she bought boy clothes and said "girls can wear blue as well".  But she has not said anything negative about it being a girl.

She has, however, stuck her tongue out when I told her a name we were considering.  It took a lot in me not to freak out when she did that.

  • I think secretly, deep down, my mother was hoping it was a girl for us.  But, my sister has a little boy and girl....so she's got her granddaughter.  She, like everyone else, is just excited to hear that everything is developing as it should and the baby seems healthy so far.

This happened to us too! She kept buying clothes that were purple or had flowers on them. She'd say "well they we're 70% off at wherever and really the types I bought are for sleeping , no one will see him in them."

Yea I donated that stuff. I don't think she'll do that this time.

No, but if our baby was a boy, my H's family would have been upset and I am 100% sure they would have been vocal about it.  And I would have gotten stabby.

Someone mentioned in the other thread that they will never understand gender disappointment, ever, and that kind of bugged me.  I don't think people other than the parents have a right to be disappointed, and I think that people that are ZOMG GONNA DIE because the baby isn't the gender they wanted suck, but I don't think it's weird to have a gender in mind and then be a little upset (within reason) if your baby doesn't turn out to be that gender, as long as you come to terms with it and move on and treat that baby awesomely.  And this is coming from someone who didn't have any disappointment even though I had a slight preference for a boy.

Sorry, that was a tangent. And a huge run-on sentence.

I get that it's normal because it seems to be incredibly prevalent!  It just sucks for the pregnant mom in the situation.  Especially when it's a parent of the expected LO.

  • No one has expressed any disappointment to us.  I do think that my mom is slightly disappointed (like me).  I have a boy and my sister just had a boy so we were really hoping for a little girl.  My mom and I are pretty girly and were hoping for a little girl to spoil.  But we're excited that all 3 boys will be so close in age.
