Induction and Pitocin.....

So my dr's asst just called me and said that if he doesn't come by this weekend they are going to induce me on Tuesday at 6:30 am! I am really excited about this but at the same time I am a little bit nervous about the process in which they will start the induction. I have read up a little bit on induction and have seen that some times they will just break your water and see how things progress or they will start you out on pitocin. I just want to hear everyone's experience with being induced and/or having to use picocin and if it had any negative side effects. Etc :)

  • With DD, my water broke at about 1:30am, and i wasn't feeling really any harsh contractions. They were very very mild - i didn't even realize they were contractions until they hooked me up to monitor me.  By about 8am, the contractions weren't getting stronger and more frequent and they asked me what i wanted to do -- and i said let's get started on the pitocin.  By about noon, the contractions were really strong and that was about the time they gave me an epidural.  I was finally at 10cm by about 4:30pm and pushed for an hour an a half before DD came!  She had a big head -- and they actually asked me if i wanted a redose of the epidural before i started pushing.  I didn't bother --  i didn't get nauseous, but i do remember getting a bit of the chills and my temp going up a little bit.  Otherwise, i didn't have any major side effects -- at least not that i know of.  I did have 2 stitches, but as i mentioned DD's head was huge -- she's always been like in the 90th percentile with head circumference. lol

  • My water broke at home with DD1 and I wasn't contrating. They got the pitocin going and within an hour I was having regular contractions. I went to the hospital at 3:30am, probably got hooked up to the pitocin around 7am, by 9am I had an epidural, pushed for about 30 minutes and by noon I was snuggling my baby.

I had no issues with the pitocin, but I was hurting pretty bad right before getting my epi.

  • I was just induced with Pit on Monday. I went into l&d 2cm and 50% effaced and really wasn't a candidate for cervadil. I also couldn't have my water broken right away due to polyhydramnios and risk of prolapsed cord. I labored fine on the Pit as it was gradually increased for 7 hours before they did break my water when I was 80% effaced and 2-3cm. I practiced Hypnobirthing and did ok for another hour and a half. I did get an epi. My Pit dose was 15 max is 21 and contractions were one on top of the other. Pit definitely makes them more intense. Once I got the epi I was fine awhile, I then dilated from 4cm to 10 in less than an hour so the epi failed from my belt area down and the boost didn't kick in in time to push. I felt everything, but it was worth it. I had an epi with my first and only felt pressure no pain, so really it depends on your birth. My first was posterior.

  • I believe that once you start pitocin, your chance of having a c-section are greatly increased. It is also my experience that pitocin contractions are a real ***. However, if you're not trying for a natural childbirth like I was, you won't experience the worst of it.

FTR: My water broke at 7AM and I still wasn't contracting at 4PM I started pit at 6:30 and had a baby at 4:41. The only reason it took that long to get him out, was because his heart rate kept dropping during contractions and i had to move around a bunch to get him into a favorable position for pushing. I was able to deliver vaginally.
