Anyone try red wine to induce labor?

Just curious!! I heard it works but I'm afraid to try it.  Plus- I'm only 38 weeks:)

Re: Anyone try red wine to induce labor?

  • One of my German friends mentioned that to me.  They generally have a more relaxed attitude toward that sort of thing in Europe.  I might give it a shot!

  • I've never heard of drinking it to induce, but I have read some birth stories ( a few from Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth) where a woman who thinks she may be in labor is told to drink some wine. If it relaxes her and the contractions stop, it's not labor. If the contractions continue or pick up, it's likely the real thing. Kind of the same effect as taking a bath.

  • I haven't heard this, but I had a glass last night at book club. Still pregnant....

  • Never heard of red wine to induce labor before but I know that it's common for midwives to recommend guinness in late pregnancy for iron. At this point, I'm happy to try just about anything and a nice glass of shiraz sounds heavenly right now.

  • Wine (any alcohol) is a smooth muscle relaxant. The uterus is a smooth muscle, so it will not cause labor by any means. In fact, before we knew better, we used to give alcohol IV to stop preterm labor. The PP who said drink it, if it stops your contractions its not real labor is absolutely correct. I wouldn't do it, but its true.

  • At 41 weeks Saturday I am trying this RIGHT NOW.  I will add it to my list of crazy attempts to evacuate baby Girl and I will keep you posted :)

  • I've never heard of using it to induce, but I've heard several doctors recommend it for relaxation.

You and me both, sista! If I go one more week without this little bean-ball coming out I will have myself a nice big glass of red wine and I will toast to all you ladies who are still growing your own little bean-balls!

  • My doc told me yesterday that you need to totally relax yourself to let natural labor happen.  Red wine helps that.  She was a L&D nurse for 14 years prior to becoming an OB, so I trust her experience.  A warm bath + small glass of red wine sounds heavenly to me tonight :)

I have to say, the relaxation thing is very true in my experience.  With DS, it was only after a long, relaxing drive with DH, a slice of apple pie & ice cream, a long shower, and laying down on the sofa for awhile that my water broke out of nowhere.  Then, during labor, it was only after I got the epi that my body was relaxed enough to allow my cervix to dilate.  I went from 2 to 10 in less than 45 minutes once that tension was relieved.  My doc says she sees that a lot.

  • I will be 41 weeks tomorrow and I had a (small) glass of wine last night... nada going on.  Tonight I have a massage scheduled with specific intent to focus on pressure points to start labor and I plan to have a hot bath when I get home.  Induction was originally scheduled for last night but I pushed it back to this coming Tuesday... I might try another glass of wine on Sunday or Monday.  Also, I have 4 family members staying with us and this is NOT relaxing so perhaps just checking into the hospital will start labor!
