Why do they look so skinny compared to the other brands (Baby Gap, Gymboree, etc)? Are they known to run small? It seems like everything is at least one size smaller than other onesies we have of the same size!
It all depends on how your baby is built. My DD has always been in the 50th for height and 10th for weight and has always worn Carter's stuff 'on schedule' I guess.
She wore NB size clothes for almost 2 months and 0-3 until 5 months or so. Carter's onesies always fit her best of any brand we had. Sometimes onesies are made to fit shorter, thicker babies and some are built to fit leaner babies better.
My unborn child has a huge closet full of clothes and we have personally purchased exactly one outfit for her. Needless to say we have a lot of wonderful family/friends who are excited and have bought her outfits. This has been wonderful and has resulted in her having stuff from almost every brand of baby clothes on earth. I don't think that there are any two brands that look alike in size. Carter's is especially small. We'll see how it all fits when she's born. I figure she has enough stuff that we'll just fit it all on her by trial and error as she grows.
Don't forget to keep in mind that cloth diapers are bulkier, and so they can make a "true fit" seem small in some cases if you are going that route.
It's been weird in the last few weeks potty training DS, because his shorts and pants were pushing the limit and we thought we would need to buy more for this summer, but once he went to undies, they fit great (and are loose in some cases). Some of the pants are getting too short but that's another story.

I LOVE carters clothes. We have an outlet near us that always has great sales and coupons you can use on top of the sales. Because of this 80% of my kids clothes is carters. I found that it ran pretty true to size, especially the sizes for the first year ( My DD is very tall and thin and has been in size 2T since before she was 18 months). Gymboree runs pretty true to size and in some styles runs a little big.
I am just echoing what others have said: Gerber sucks, Carters runs true to size, and GAP and Gymboree run large. The only quality issues I have ever had were from Gerbers and I will never buy them again! We have a TON of Carters, GAP, and Old Navy here.
I found Carter's to run big. DS could always wear Cater's stuff longer than any other brand in the same size. I bought Gerber onesies once and would never buy them again. They run so small and the quality is terrible. Gap and Gymboree run true to size. Old Navy runs on the smaller side.
My son has mostly always worn carter's clothing including the onsies. They have always ran true to size for us...besides the onesies are nice under clothing so to have them fitted is the best. They wash great and maintain their shape and quality. With our second one arriving in just a few weeks, we have stocked her room with carter's clothes. Good luck!

That has been my experience anyway...

ETA: Janie and Jack runs big too, IMO.
