Baby Bjorn

HI mamas!

So far I've managed without it although there are times where I could really use it.

But is it too late for one now? DD is 18lbs so not sure if she's getting too big for it and is not worth getting one now?

What is your experience with it, what is the weight limit etc? Or do you have other carrier recs that could last a little while?

TIA!!

Re: Baby Bjorn

  • We have an Ergo and LOVE it.  It's super comfortable for me and for DD and the weight limit on it is 45 pounds. I use our Ergo for grocery shopping, walks, and all kinds of other things.

  • Our LO is 16 lbs, and we had him in the Baby Bjorn for a baseball game the other weekend. I'm not sure what the manufacturer recommends for a weight limit, but there was definately plenty of room in it for a bigger baby.

My only concern is that it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. I prefer a simple sling, mine are made by SevenSlings.  But my SO likes the Baby Bjorn, it's much more manly. Sadly, he's got some back problems that aren't going away, so he won't be using it anytime soon.

  • I don't have a Bjorn, but I don't think it is too late for a carrier. We have a Moby Wrap and an Ergo. I like them both, but for different things. Overall, I think the Ergo is more comfortable to wear in most situations, but I really like the Moby for travel. We have flown DD 16 times so far and I vote for the Moby, hands down, on an airplane because it is the only way that we can both get any sleep (without DD strapped to me, I would be scared of dropping her when I snoozed). The Ergo is awkward to sit in an airplane seat with, but I can barely feel that I am wearing the Moby. I think that both the Moby and the Ergo will still be useful for quite a while.

  • Another Ergo & Moby Wrap lover here! One of my friend's sisters still uses her Moby Wrap for her one year old, so youll definitely get a lot of use out of it. At first the wrapping methods are confusing, but once you get the hang of it, its great. I use mine all the time for walks in the city and especially when we visit friends and Z wont go down for a nap with all the action. Instead, he'll fall asleep in the MW.

As for the Ergo, my neighbor originally had the Baby Bjorn and switched to the Ergo and found it way more comfortable. Ive also seen people in the city wearing it backpack style with kids who must have been about 2 years old!

Whatever you get, its definitely worth it!

  • Thanks so much! I'll have to look at those other two carriers rather that the Bjorn or at least so I can compare them all.

Are the MW and Ergo easy to use on your own or do you need somebody to help you pack the kiddos up in there? :)

  • Personally Ive never had help packing up Z with either one (in fact its harder when DH tries to help!) so youll be fine.
  • def. not too late, but I have to say I hate bjorns. I tried one once and it hurt my back and it looked painful for the baby.  My ergo kicks butt though.

This. I did practice wrapping the Moby at home a few times before I tried to do it elsewhere, but it is really no big deal after you learn how to do a few of the wraps. I have even gotten coordinated enough to wrap it without dragging the 20 feet of dangling fabric on dirty floors in public.

  • It's definitely not too late to begin using a carrier but I (and many other baby wearers) would caution you against using a Bjorn or any other type of "dangler" style carriers. I have a sling, Moby, and hybrid carrier by Infantino. I plan on getting an Ergo this summer. Different carriers are good for different things , although the sling is my current favorite!

    Me = jealous of this.

  • ergo!

your baby is actually the perfect size for it now - don't need the infant insert.  It's very easy to put on by yourself.  get the teething pads too - DS sucks on it constantly so it saves washing the whole thing.

  • There's a learning curve to it, but I enjoy the moby wrap.  I can easily put him in by myself, plus it's so light that I don't mind wearing it in public without the baby inside.  It also stores more easily too as I can roll it up and stuff it in the diaper bag.

Whichever you choose, I believe most carriers/wraps go up to at least 30 lbs.  So it's definately not too late.

  • My LO is also 18 lbs and I'd say you're at about the end of the comfort level on the bjorn-type carriers. Even the moby is getting a little heavy.

I second PP recs for the ergo. I have a range of carriers and as my DS (both of 'em) got bigger it has the most staying power. Ergo distributes weight to the hips, rather than all in the back - like a good backpack does. It can also be used as a backpack carrier for bigger kids which is pretty nice.

    ditto.

  • I have an ergo and a moby wrap and my LO hates them both...he never allowed us to swaddle either. He just likes to be free! I thought the dangling baby thing was a little weird with the bjorn but I finally broke down and gave it a chance and wouldn't you know - he loves it! He likes to see the world. Not just be pressed up against my chest...though you can face them inwards in a bjorn as well. Just thought I'd give the flip side because I also tried the others first since I had heard better reviews for them. Just depends on your baby I've found! Also, the weight limit is 25lbs.
  • It's not too late for a baby carrier but there are much better options than a Bjorn, we have a moby wrap and a Manduca (similar to the Ergo but german made) and we love both. The only thing is the wrap have a learning curve and I like it more for newborns. I want to get now a wooven wrap since we love babywearing. The Manduca just like an Ergo are comfy for the wearer and for the baby.

This. DD is just under 16 lb., and is still sits in the front comfortably. You can wear LO in the Ergo on your hip/side and back, too, as they get older but I haven't tried those positions yet.
