Amber Portwood Prison: 'Teen Mom' Sentenced To 5 Years

Amber Portwood is headed to prison now that a judge has reimposed her original prison sentence, which was handed down from a December 2011 drug arrest.

Portwood, who appeared on the MTV reality show "Teen Mom," faced a judge Tuesday and was sentenced her to five years behind bars. She had previously struck a plea agreement, which mandated she complete a drug rehab program or go to prison.

Last week, Portwood appeared in court and, to her lawyer's dismay, told a judge she was unable to complete her rehab program. According to TMZ, she said she will always be a "bad girl" and asked to be sent to prison instead.

In 2010, Portwood was charged with three felonies for domestic violence against her ex-fiance, Gary Shirley, which occurred while their daughter Leah was present and was caught by MTV cameras. She was placed on two years probation -- after a two-year jail sentence was suspended -- which she violated in 2011 when she got into a physical altercation and was found with prescription medication without having a prescription.

In June 2011, Portwood was rushed to the hospital after what was rumored to be a suicide attempt.

Portwood, who will be referred to the Indiana Department of Corrections' drug treatment program, appeared on the first cycle of MTV's "Teen Mom" which featured her life with Leah, who is now 3 years old.

There comes a time in a persons life where you need to own up to your own decisions and expectations regardless of where you came from or what you experienced. I don't pity anyone who chooses to act like that. She had help available all throughout the taping of teen mom and never took it or tried to change.

  • I love Teen Mom .. but Amber deserves jail. She's not a good role model for Leah.

and to the OP, you sure did take a lot of time to link all that! lol :P

  • I can't believe that she told the judge that she was unable to complete her rehab program and asked to be sent to prison instead. That's insane to me. 5 years is a looong time to be locked up. I bet that she will regret that decision.

Lol I'm 21. I'm not a wacko. I got married at 19, pregnant at 20. And I don't do drugs or beat my husband up. Or scream and cuss in front of my kid all day long. She's a screw up, and I think she always will be, regardless of age. Her being young is not a good excuse to be that way IMO

  • I'm sad for this mum and her daughter :( this is why someone so young and without any support shouldn't fall pregnant.

I hope her daughter lives a better life than her mum.

  • So sad. I agree, she needs to own up to her actions. I also agree that she is young, and should have some lee-way, however, when you CHOOSE to carry and have a child, you give up your "wild and crazy" days, imo.

Honestly, it seems like she has a mental condition and needs a lot of help. I don't see how jail is going to help her. She needs some serious mental evaluations, medication, and regular therapy. One of my best friend is bipolar, and I see a lot of the same hot/cold behavior with Amber. It's something that never goes away, but can be controlled with help.

  • I'm older, but think once you have kids, you have made the choice to give up wild and crazy. You can still have a life and have adult fun, but it needs to be done responsibly at that point.

I'm 23. I got pregnant only a few months after turning 21, had the girls a week before my 22nd birthday. My situation isn't ideal but I would never and have never done drugs or been physical or emotionally abusive to my childrens father. I really don't believe age factors in either. Once you're a parent, I don't care if you're 16, you made the choice to be a parent, act like one.

Come on Hal.  If you're going to omit a verb in referencing someone's meNtal state, the term "crazy" or "is crazy" simply becomes "cray" or "cray cray".  Therefore, you should have stated, SHE CRAY CRAY!  Stick out tongueWink
