How active is "active"?

I was just wondering when people say they have an active baby what they define as active? This is my first so I really have nothing to compare my baby's movements to. My baby makes movements throughout the day, and usually will kick strongly for periods of a half an hour or so, maybe two or three times a day. I never feel it when I'm on my feet though (I'm standing most of the day, work at a middle school) but if I sit I can usually feel a subtle punch or kick here and there. It's always more when I'm relaxing in the evening. I just don't know if I would consider mine active or not that active...

  • I don't have an answer for you as I am a FTM too but I wonder the same thing! I feel her periodically and then sometimes she goes absolutely crazy!! Then she'll be quiet for awhile. I feel her most early in the morning or later in the evening when I it's calm and quiet.

BTW- it looks like we have the same due date:-)

  • I feel movements throughout the day but there are definitely 4 or 5 periods a day when baby is stronger.  We're at the point that my husband can see the baby punch/kick in there and make my belly jump.

I also very rarely feel the baby move when I am standing or walking.  I just noticed a few slight movements the past week when standing, but I was sort of leaning on the counter and not straight up.  Never felt him while walking...I wonder if it's just cause I am usually more preoccupied when walking/standing?

ETA:  I am also a FTM, so not sure if that helps you much.

  • I have been told my son is very active! I am a FTM as well, but i had no idea that walking made baby sleep.

I feel him when I am walking or sitting or standing or laying down, does not matter! Unless he is sleeping, and I am getting to know when he is up or when he sleeps, he is moving! And when he is sleeping, he is so calm I feel only small movements, no matter what i do... :o)

Maybe active is different for everyone, and maybe i am just growing the next olympic runner, and he cant wait to start! lol

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I'm a FTM with what I consider to be an "active" baby.  She moves all the time.  I'd say I feel bouts of movement every 10-15 minutes throughout most of the day and then there are 4 or 5 times throughout the day (especially late at night) that she's highly active - meaning lots of kicks, punches, turns and wiggles for about 20 minutes straight.  I joked to DH that she's going to be a gymnast and he said she's going to be a ninja ;-)

It does vary though from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy.  Most of the women in my birthing class don't have nearly as much movement.  And I don't think it always translates in real life.  My best friend's daughter moved non-stop in utero and ended up being the most laid back, easygoing kid while her son was very quiet and hardly ever moved (to the point that she would worry) and he is a crazy little ball of energy now.

  • My doctor said basically an "active" baby will move enough throughout the day that you don't need to do any kick counting (10 or more movements an hour). This LO is definitely active enough that I never have to think about counting kicks - he's constantly squirming around in there.

  • I'm a FTM too and it sounds like mine is the same way...kicks and jabs here and there throughout the day. Seems like mine is more "active" at night though- kicks and jabs that make my belly move :-). I asked the dr. what is considered ok, and she said minimum they like to see is 10 movements a day, and anything above that is extra. She also said to expect the movements to become more like a rolling movement than kicking or jabbing as they get larger and start running out of room. :-)

This. My little girl rarely sleeps. I feel her moving all the time, even when walking/moving. I've never had to think about kick counting. :)
