Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Have you called poison control before?

And if so how many times? I guess I just want some company (misery loves company). I feel like crap because I've had to call them two times in the past 2 days :/ Part of me felt like they were going to come take my kid. I hate myself right now.

Both times she was ok. And they just advised to give fluids. I only took my eyes off of her for a few seconds when these things happened. :(

  • I've called once or twice.  Don't feel bad.  Toddlers are fast!

  • Yup.

I had to call yesterday because my little one pulled himself up in the laundry room while I was switching the load and I caught him licking the spout of the laundry detergent.

They advised to push fluids - In case this ever happens to anyone else...

I felt like crap, but learned pretty quick that I needed to move the detergent up a shelf.

  • I've had to call and I think many many parents have!  It only takes them a second to get into stuff.  The only thing I'd say here is that it's a good time to step back and really look at how she got into whatever it is and see if there's a theme (i.e. not cabinets are locked - get locks, you leave meds in your purse (this was me!) - retrain yourself to lock up EVERYTHING, etc.)  I'm glad she's ok!

  • I never had to call with DS#1. But I have called twice with DS#2 in the past 6 months. I felt like a total mommy fail both times...especially the 2nd time. It happens...

They always seem to be really good about it and I hope don't judge too much!

  • Yes, for me! I got this homemade swimmer's ear solution in my eye and needed to know if I had to worry about going blind!

  • I did about a month ago. DS actually got into a bottle of Ibuprofin and I had no idea how much he ingested. I called PC and they adviced me to watch for vomiting, which never happend. I was a total wreck and didn't think to call any of my RN friends. PC talked to their on call doc and he said the ER was not necessary, but since I believed him to have taken 3-4 and I told this to an RN I work with, he said I should have taken him in right away. I will next time. PC is not a replacement for medical care.
  • Yes, twice, but both times were for my dog when he was a puppy.

So far so good with DD.

  • Yes, once.  DS was sick and, I won't bother to explain how this possibly happened, but we gave him double doses of Ibuprofen, not once, but twice, in the span of 5 hours, when even single doses should be 6+ hours apart. Complete parent fail. We are normally so careful with his medicine. I felt horrible....but they said he would be fine.

  • Once, she got into the hand sanitizer in her diaper bag.  She was fine, no ill effects.  Don't feel bad, that is what they are there for.

Once. He got into my eye shadow.

DS loves my makeup. He always tries to get in that drawer. Since I am paranoid about him eating it, I moved it up to the cabinet- (just not before he dropped my mascara in the toilet)

  • Once. I was giving DS a bath and since he had a rash I sprinkled aveno oatmeal powder. Before I knew what was happening he scooped some up and ate it, I tried to get as much as I could out of his mouth but I have no idea if he swallowed any. I thought it's aveno oatmeal how bad could it be, but I read the warning label immediately and it says do not ingest. I called poison control, they said watch for vomiting and pushed fluids.

he had it all over his face. It was talc based so it was ok, but apparently mascara is really bad. He constantly loses the makeup sponge in my compact, which he has scraped bare before too. I have an empty one to give him.

  • Never for my DS. I've gotten lucky with him. He just doesn't put a lot in his mouth. I have called once for me, and once for DH though. Apparently we have more trouble than DS! lol!
  • I called for the first time at about 6 months and I've called a couple times since then. They've all been things that turned out to be okay to eat but I felt like crap.

    It happens!

  • I called because he ate one of my lactation herbal supplemts. I wasn't too worried but called immediately just to be sure. The dude started asking me about if the pills helped me lactate ... It was weird. Everything was fine but my kiddo spelled like fennel.

  • once because DS ate fire ants.

Apparently they're an incredibly good source of protein and nothing to be concerned about. lol.
