In their class. I was talking to the other mom's and they were telling me the cutoff date is sometime in September so if you have an October baby he or she will be the oldest. What do you guys think about that? Our kids will be the first to get their learner permit I suppose.
Re: Our kids will be the oldest ones
I doubt it, so many people are red-shirting their June babies these days. But I would prefer an October 1 baby to September 30 for this reason. Also - some states have different cut off dates than September 30.
Our babies are being born in the most popular part of the year. I saw this cool graphic the other day.

As the mom-to-be of a boy, I'm absolutely thrilled. We actually purposely we trying to conceive an October baby for this reason (yup, I'm an uber planner!). Having a child that's more mature and older than the other kids is such an advantage in school and in things like sports.
DH was a May baby and one of the youngest.. he hated it.
I actually wanted my kids to be 3 years apart in school, so with an October baby, I'll most likely have that happen. It'll depend on which state we end up in when the kids start school, but I'd actually prefer DS#2 start a year later.
I don't really care whether he is the oldest in his class or whatever. I think it's better than having a 17 year old starting college... and I personally was jealous of the kids that could start driving before me!

I am in NY too. DD is a November baby, so she would be even younger. I am going to wait and see how each kid does (and probably have them tested) before making a decision like that. I know plenty of people who were the young ones, including H, and they were fine and said it wasn't a big deal to them.
Ditto..the cutoff in NYC is Dec. 31st. So our LO will probably be on the younger side if we do public school. Private schools have much earlier cut offs, so he would need to wait another year.
I guess MA has one of the earlier cut-offs. Here it is Sept 1st, so with my October 18th due date she will be one of the oldest. But probably not the oldest.
My other two are June and July, so they will be on the younger side.
I'm really torn on this. In MD the cutoff is September 1st, but anyone September 2nd - October 15th has the opportunity get a waiver on the cutoff dates if they take an exam. Clearly if she's not ready we'll keep her back, but looking at DD1 if we had to hold her back I think there would be a lot of problems. We've already had some issues at daycare because she was bored, and we're very excited that she's officially starting preschool and will be in the 3/4 class. So if DD2 is like DD1, I don't know what we're going to do.
I spoke to my mom about this and apparently my mom had the option to push my sister ahead ahead with a waiver and exam because we have a January birthday, but she chose to keep us back because they were worried about maturity levels and puberty. I guess in the early 80's that's what most people did. I was always in the gifted and talented programs and AP and Honors classes all throughout school and it was all very easy for me.
I'm not sure what I am going to do. My SD is a Sept 2 baby and she is one of the youngest in her class. Her maturity and skills are really behind the other kids- it's clear.
I believe the date is December 31st in NYC public schools- really late.
Texas is September 1st.
So while she will be older than most of her class, we lucked out and our kids who will be 14 months apart will be 2 grades apart.

We're in Texas, so I think our cutoff is sometime in September. We deliberately held off on TTC because we didn't want our kids to be the youngest in their class. Some people told us we were crazy for trying to "time" the birthday, but we got pregnant on the first try and ended up with exactly the birthday we were hoping for, assuming baby doesn't come early and mess up the timing!
Kids who are older have had more time to develop both physically and emotionally and therefore tend to do better in school. But I'll admit, our decision was based more on the high school perks - getting your driver's license first, getting to go see rated R movies earlier, these were the things DH and I were jealous of growing up (I'm a February birthday and he is April), so we're excited that our child will be one of the first ones to experience those milestones among her friends.
Not sure how up to date this link is, but it list's all State cut offs:

I'm seriously thinking about making my son pass an exam where he'd be admitted in the class before. I don't see how being born one week after September 30th should make him miss the entire year. Basically he'll be almost 6 starting kindergarten. We'll see I guess. The younger/older thing doesn't bother me at all. He'll mature faster if he's the grade above, that's all.
Anyone else notice how September happens to be the most pouplar month? Seems like people like making babies around the Holidays!
I am in NY as well, is it like this for the whole State? I tryed researching and found Dec. 31st. but im fine with Dec. 1st i hope it stays that way I don't mind him being the younger one in class (if he is ready for school by that time).
