Our kids will be the oldest ones

In their class. I was talking to the other mom's and they were telling me the cutoff date is sometime in September so if you have an October baby he or she will be the oldest. What do you guys think about that? Our kids will be the first to get their learner permit I suppose.

I doubt it, so many people are red-shirting their June babies these days. But I would prefer an October 1 baby to September 30 for this reason. Also - some states have different cut off dates than September 30.

Our babies are being born in the most popular part of the year. I saw this cool graphic the other day.

I have mixed feelings about this actually.  In Georgia, the cut off for kindergarten is September 1st, so there will be a few older kids.  As it is state specific, some may still make the cut-off, and other states give parents the option to have their kids tested for school readiness.   I am an Ocotber baby myself, and was always the youngest in my class growing up.  The only time it bothered me was when everyone else was driving, or when we all turned 21.  I personally wish that I at least had the option to decide whether my child was ready for kindergarten rather than being forced to wait another year.

As the mom-to-be of a boy, I'm absolutely thrilled. We actually purposely we trying to conceive an October baby for this reason (yup, I'm an uber planner!). Having a child that's more mature and older than the other kids is such an advantage in school and in things like sports.

DH was a May baby and one of the youngest.. he hated it.

I actually wanted my kids to be 3 years apart in school, so with an October baby, I'll most likely have that happen. It'll depend on which state we end up in when the kids start school, but I'd actually prefer DS#2 start a year later.

I don't really care whether he is the oldest in his class or whatever. I think it's better than having a 17 year old starting college... and I personally was jealous of the kids that could start driving before me!

Michigan's cutoff date is December 1st. So mine will be one of the youngest as well.

Yes, September 30 is the cutoff in our state too... So, I'm going from one of the youngest kids in class to one of the oldest. It is a weird transition for my husband and I - we've both been one of the youngest in our classes and graduated at 17... Our daughter will most likely be 17 when she graduates or graduate on the day she turns 18.  So, having a baby that will be 18 at graduation (if all goes as planned is a different mindset). I'm also going to see where our child is developmentally. We have the option of putting the baby in private kindergarten - which would allow the baby (hate using the pronoun "it") to start when ready - and then transition into the school for grade 1 a little young.

I don't mind it at all! I was an Oct baby so I was always older in all my classes. I actually preferred it. I was also always one of the most advanced students in my class. It's better to be more mature especially when our children reach middle and high school.

I am a teacher and in my state kindergarten is not required. I could have him skip if I wanted too. We will see. Boys mature later anyway so he may be better off starting late.

I am in NY and the cut off date is Dec. 1.  My dh would prefer to hold this one back (probably to red shirt) but I am not so sure I want my kids 4 years apart in school.  It will totally depend on how ready I feel this one is for kindergarten.

I am in NY too. DD is a November baby, so she would be even younger. I am going to wait and see how each kid does (and probably have them tested) before making a decision like that. I know plenty of people who were the young ones, including H, and they were fine and said it wasn't a big deal to them.

Ditto..the cutoff in NYC is Dec. 31st. So our LO will probably be on the younger side if we do public school. Private schools have much earlier cut offs, so he would need to wait another year.

This is actually one of the things I was happiest about when I found out my due date. Mostly b/c the decision will be out of my hands. I was born in August and was always one of the youngest. Even though I was fine through school it stunk when my WHOLE class got their license before me and then in college I couldn't even go to the bars with my friends b/c I didn't turn 21 until 3 months after we graduated!! Perhaps not the best reasons to dislike being one of the youngest...but I'm happy my LO will be on the other end!!

I guess MA has one of the earlier cut-offs. Here it is Sept 1st, so with my October 18th due date she will be one of the oldest. But probably not the oldest.

My other two are June and July, so they will be on the younger side.

I'm really torn on this.  In MD the cutoff is September 1st, but anyone September 2nd - October 15th has the opportunity get a waiver on the cutoff dates if they take an exam.  Clearly if she's not ready we'll keep her back, but looking at DD1 if we had to hold her back I think there would be a lot of problems.  We've already had some issues at daycare because she was bored, and we're very excited that she's officially starting preschool and will be in the 3/4 class.  So if DD2 is like DD1, I don't know what we're going to do.

I spoke to my mom about this and apparently my mom had the option to push my sister ahead ahead with a waiver and exam because we have a January birthday, but she chose to keep us back because they were worried about maturity levels and puberty.  I guess in the early 80's that's what most people did.  I was always in the gifted and talented programs and AP and Honors classes all throughout school and it was all very easy for me.

I'm actually ok with that.  Not that I think intelectually that will put my kids ahead (DS will be older as well), but that socially they will be a little more ahead of the younger ones and I think that will help a bit more when they need to concentrate or sit still for longer periods of time.  Plus DS is very shy and I think being older might make him feel a little more confident in school.

The cut off date in CT right now is December 31st!  So LO will be one of the younger kids in his/her class OR if we decide to keep him/her in preschool an extra year and send to school the following year he/she may be one of the oldest.  I'd prefer being one of the oldest in the class.  I'm a teacher and I feel many kids benefit from an extra year at home or in preschool before entering Kindergarten for emotional/social/acaademic reasons.  But to each his one, it's a personal decision!

I'm not sure what I am going to do. My SD is a Sept 2 baby and she is one of the youngest in her class. Her maturity and skills are really behind the other kids- it's clear.

I believe the date is December 31st in NYC public schools- really late.

    Texas is September 1st.

So while she will be older than most of her class, we lucked out and our kids who will be 14 months apart will be 2 grades apart.

We're in Texas, so I think our cutoff is sometime in September. We deliberately held off on TTC because we didn't want our kids to be the youngest in their class.  Some people told us we were crazy for trying to "time" the birthday, but we got pregnant on the first try and ended up with exactly the birthday we were hoping for, assuming baby doesn't come early and mess up the timing!

Kids who are older have had more time to develop both physically and emotionally and therefore tend to do better in school. But I'll admit, our decision was based more on the high school perks - getting your driver's license first, getting to go see rated R movies earlier, these were the things DH and I were jealous of growing up (I'm a February birthday and he is April), so we're excited that our child will be one of the first ones to experience those milestones among her friends.

I'm seriously thinking about making my son pass an exam where he'd be admitted in the class before.  I don't see how being born one week after September 30th should make him miss the entire year.  Basically he'll be almost 6 starting kindergarten. We'll see I guess.  The younger/older thing doesn't bother me at all.  He'll mature faster if he's the grade above, that's all.

It depends, my bday is in Oct and I was able to start early. So, I was always the youngest and did not turn 18,until my freshman year of college.

Our cutoff is like Oct 1st, I think. I went early with both my girls and if this baby follows suit, I may make the cut off and she'd be one of the youngest. Who knows. I'm not overly worried about it. If for some reason I don't think she's ready I'll just hold her a year when the time comes.
