Looking for some reassurance...

So I've posted on here a few times about how my family is on the east coast and I am in Arizona.  My mom has offered to throw us a baby shower back east and I thought it would be fine to fly back for it when I am 33 weeks pregnant.  I confess now that when we picked the date, I didn't realize how pregnant 33 weeks really is.  I was just thinking it was a full 2 months before my due date, and how first time moms tend to go late, per what everyone was telling me.  So I thought I would be fine.

Now, my hubby and apparently my mom too, are saying that I'm pushing it and now I'm really nervous.  I already bought the tickets, but I have travel insurance on them just in case.  I've been cleared by my doctor to fly as long as nothing comes up between now and then.

So I am just hoping that someone on here can reassure me that they flew at 33 weeks or later and was fine?  It is literally making me sick this morning how nervous I am about it, and I don't fly until the end of the month.

Re: Looking for some reassurance...

  • its questionable, but as long as the doctor cleared you and you're feeling fine the week of, go for it.  :)   good call on getting the travel insurance, too, just in case.

  • I wouldnt. You would be looking at swelling and edema and other issues. Im sorry Im working till week 31, its gotten hard fast. What does your doctor say?
  • It will be fine.  Enjoy your shower back home.

  • I know 3 weeks can make a huge difference, but I flew last weekend at 30 weeks and had no problems at all.  I drank a tons of water and made sure to stand up a few times during the flight.  I also got seats that had extra leg room so i was able to stretch my legs out while sitting.  If that's possible for you I would look into it.

I think that as long as your doctor is ok with it and you've been feel good so far you should be fine.

  • I would check with your doctor. My doc cleared me to travel up to week 34.

I don't have any previous experience, but I'm in a similar situation. My family planned a big vacation before I got pregnant. I'll be 33/34 weeks during the trip, so I haven't decided for sure if I'm going to go. I have plane tickets, but can cancel so I'm going to ask my dr tons of questions about flying risks at my appointment the week before. I'll base my decision on his answers and how I'm feeling the week before we leave. I'd say my major concerns are swelling and my husband can't get off of work that week so he won't be there and I'm not totally comfortable being that far away close to the end of my pregnancy. My doctor already said I could fly up to the airline's cutoff, which is 36 weeks in my case. Ultimately you just have to be comfortable with your decision if your doctor already cleared you. Good luck with your decision, I know it's hard!

  • I think if your doctor is fine with it, don't listen to your family members.

I am still flying frequently for work and personal travel at about 30 weeks, and have had zero problems.  Just like I always do when I travel, pregnant or not, I drink a ton of water and get up and move around regularly.  I haven't had any issues with swelling.  My one piece of advice would be to bring a small pillow that you can ball up and put behind your lower back, because my lower back has tended to hurt a bit on longer flights.

We are taking a long road trip/vacation at 33-35 weeks, and my Mom and husband are also worried about it.  But my doctor didn't bat an eye and said it was totally fine.  I did make an appointment with her for right before I leave, just to reassure my family members.

  • I am in the same boat.  I'll be flying from TX to CT for my shower at 32 weeks and back at 33 weeks.  I'm healthy, no swelling, no bp issues, and no GD.  I'm not worried :) like pp said, drink plenty of water and get up and walk around every hour or so, you'll be fine!

  • With my singleton pregnancy, I would have flown at 33 weeks. Just make sure to drink plenty of fluids and to get up every 45 minutes to walk around. Of course, make sure your doctor is okay with it, maybe even see if you can get in for a visit right before you leave.

I went on a roadtrip at 34 weeks and was totally fine.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear.  (I'm going to CT too how funny!)  Thanks to all the girls for your input!  I will see how I feel that week and try not to stress up until that point.

  • I am 31 weeks almost and cant imagine flying.  IMO

at 33 weeks... but it depends on your health - your mood and what your dr says

    lolololo
  • It's not exactly the same, but I'm driving across the country (from Philly to NM) at between 32 and 33 weeks.  My doctor is fine with it; I've got a friend to share the driving with and I'm just planning on taking lots of breaks to stretch my legs.
  • I flew at 36 weeks last pregnancy. Yes, I did swell but it was fine.
