Opinion on a "family" name

I really like the name Morgan for a girl but I have a first cousin with this name. I am not very close with her and haven't seen her in over 20 years (she lives abroad).  Her parents are my god parents and we communicate occasionally through cards and email. Would using the name for our child be odd?

Re: Opinion on a "family" name

  • I'd try to avoid duplicating names as much as possible (unless of course you are using a name to honour someone). I have a very large extended family and every time I find a name I like it takes me ages to remember whether or not it has been used yet. I just figure with all the beautiful names out there, there is no need to use one more than once in a family.

  • If you love the name, use it. You said that you hardly ever see her. So don't worry about it.

  • If you haven't talked to your cousin in 20 years, I doubt you'll talk to her again for the next 20 years. I'd go ahead and use it.

  • Nah, my sister is named Alison and our first cousin named her DD Allison. To avoid any weirdness, I'd just ask that side of the family for "permission" to use the name first. Your cousin will likely be flattered; my sister was.

  • My sister's name is Cara and our cousin named her daughter Kara, no big deal.

  • I don't think it's a big deal, but Morgan is all boy IMO.

  • I don't think it'd be odd at all.

  • My sisters middle name is Morgan after our mom's dad. I think it would be fine to use

  • If you love it and want to, I would! Like you said its not like the kids will be in the same school system, same friends etc. They are cousins not siblings. If you feel weird about it I would "ask" your cousin. She will most likely be fine with it, its flattering when someone likes the name you chose.
  • I think that if you mention to her parents that you love the name and would love to use it for your LO and that you're not naming her after the daughter than your in the clear.

  • The only reason I question the choice is that it is a first cousin.

However, if you haven't seen her and she doesn't even live in the same country, not to mention there is obviously a gigantic age difference between her and your child, then I don't think it's that big of a deal, plus they will have different last names.

I would definitely make sure I chose a different middle name.
