first baseball game...help (Hepcats?)

I won!  I talked DH into taking Stella up to Detroit on Sunday (yes, they're playing like crap, but they're having a little retirement ceremony for Mags).  Any advice to talking a LO to a baseball game?

Re: first baseball game...help (Hepcats?)

  • Looking forward to the replies. We took Em to a minor league game when she was 6 weeks old and it was a piece of cake, she slept the entire time (and I had my first NIP experience Wink ). But I'm wanting to get DH some tix to his fave team for his b-day or Father's Day since he's just dying to take his girl to a game but I have no idea how she'd do. Mostly I'm not looking forward to the heat of a mid-day game!

We're going as well this weekend to see the Toronto Blue Jays.  I'm a little nervous because our little guy NEVER sits still....like, not even for a bottle anymore.  I have a feeling I'll be pacing up and down the stairs like a mad mom!!  haha.  Let me know if you hear of any tricks!!
  • We've taken all of the girls to Phillies games o ER the years- Cate went last year when she was about 3 months old. We don't buy seats -  our stadium offers standing room only tickets. We eat at a table and then walk around until we find a space that works for us, them one of us takes the older girls to the playground for a few innings. I can't imagine sitting through an entire game with a baby. When we go we know we aren't going to see the whole game, but it's more about the experience thanks the actual game for us. Have fun!

Well I know that it depends on the baby, but we took Martin last Sunday and he did amazing. We made sure to pick a game day and time that would work for him. Saturday was going to be too hot and it would be a 4PM game and that wouldn't work, so we took him Sunday when it was to be cooler and a 1PM game.

Second, we made sure to have plenty of snacks on hand and a couple of toys to keep him occupied if it became necessary. If you baby wear (which I don't think you do), you can also bring your sling or whatever to wear baby.

The ball park we went to had a stroller check for free, so we were able to bring him in from the parking lot across the way without getting too tired carrying him.

I think the key is preparing yourself to leave early if that's what's necessary. There was a couple behind us with a 10 month old that had to leave at the bottom of the 6th because their little one could NOT keep still and got fussy when the parents tried to keep him still. With Martin, we just let him crawl all over us, played with him, took him around a few times, and we didn't leave until the last pitch. But we were prepared to leave early, just like that other couple, if need be. GL!!

  • We took Ty to one last year, so no advice on how to take a toddler to a game, but I do suggest that if it'll be hot to not plan on staying for the entire game.  Also, have water for Stella, and a few little toys.  Unless you want to buy souvenirs!  (Actually, Ty's all-time fave toy is a foam mini bat, so souvenirs may not be a bad idea!)

Ty did really well, except for one moment.  We walked in to the section where our seats were at just the exact wrong time.  It was Pujols' first at bat of the game.  At this time everyone in StL thought there was NO WAY we'd make the playoffs, so this could have been Albert's last game in Busch Stadium ever.  Of course it was loud as all get out, which scared the bejezus out of Ty.  Other than that he did great!  However, he slept most of the game and was only 3 months old.

That is awesome, I'm gonna have to check in to this since I'm sure we'll go to a game at some point this season.  Last year he was small enough to baby wear while walking to and from the car... this year he a.) hates it and b.) he's too heavy!!

  • we've done a few rangers games and it has gone really well! the last one we even kept her out way past her bedtime (like the game started at her bedtime!) and she did awesome.

There is a lot to see, so that helps. We packed her diaper bag, and then a separate bag with lots of random snacks and toys for her. We introduced the little snack catcher cups and it was fun watching her figure out how to get puffs out. We also took a bunch of blueberries, a PBJ sandwich, etc. Kept her straw cup filled with ice water and she guzzled it out in that heat. I assume most ballparks let you bring in food/drink like ours does?

For toys we brought a shape sorter filled with the shape blocks but also other random little toys we could pull out and hand her. She will sit for a long time putting things in and taking things out of that thing. She never did get down, we just passed her from lap to lap, switching gears if she got antsy. But our ballpark does have lots of great pavillion areas in the stadium so if we needed to let her run off steam we could have.

I did see a few ppl with strollers, but Im not sure how we would have managed it without aisle seats. We did bring the Ergo and wear her on the way out, she fell asleep :)

And now, a picture of Lexi learning the finer points of baseball from her Opa :)

  • I cant' wait to take G to his first Tiger's game!!!  We have taken him to college volleyball and softball games but can't wait to take him to a Tiger's game.  Have fun.  Just make sure you bring something for her to drink and snack on.  G never needs toys because he loves to people watch but bring a few just in case.  Oh, and I didn't even know Mags was retirieing.  That's 2 great Detroit sports stars this week.
