XP: Blood Pressure Question

Okay so let me start by saying that my mother along with my two sisters suffered from severe preeclampsia during their first pregnancies. One of my sisters delivered her son at 28 weeks and the other at much further along at 36 weeks. I have mentioned this to my doctor during many of my visits and they have been checking my blood pressure (as they always do) and informing me of where I stand. So today, at 36 weeks and a few days, my BP was higher than it has been throughout this pregnancy (140/80). The doctor doesn't say anything about it but the woman who took it mentions to me that it is pretty high after sitting in the waiting room for 20 minutes. Just as my appointment is ending I ask about my blood pressure and she says it's high but nothing to be concerned about yet although she sends me for blood work to check for pre-e. I guess my question is this, for those of you who have suffered with BP issues how high is high enough to cause concern? I don't want to work myself up over it but I am curious what your experiences are. Thanks in advance!

Re: XP: Blood Pressure Question

  • IMO I would be concerned and voice that to the doctor. I had a high BP for me but was within the normal range and ended up with HELLP and had to have an emergency c-section. I would make sure they are aware of the family history and all that. I think for the peace of mind it is better to know that nothing else that you should be concerned about it.

  • mine has been high all pregnancy but i had hbp before pregnancy. but mine usually has been in the 137/70 rang and the last couple ones was 137/90 then he had me come in a week later and it went down to 137/80 and i go in tomorrow so we shall see, he is really watching it but he also said to me to pay attention to other signs like constant headaches that wont go away, blurred vision spots in your vision. and i haven't had any of thoes so i try not to worry to much. thats my experience with hbp though with you having family memebers that have it i would be more concerend too. I would just make sure you voice it to your doc like maverick said. :)
  • My doctor told me the rule of thumb is fir the top number not to be over 150 and the bottom not over 90. You're ok so far, just keep an eye on it!

  • I had high BP for two weeks before they induced me, when it finally got to 156/96 they delivered me. If you are concerned your dr should agree to check it daily if you want them to. You can just walk in and have a nurse check it, I was hospitalized for mine a week before it spiked just to be watched and it fluxuated quite a bit but they did watch me very closely. I would ask your dr to check you daily.  Good luck!

  • My blood pressure has also been a lot higher than normal at this point in pregnancy. Pre pregnancy, it was generally around 100/60. Up until about 35 weeks it was around 120/70, and from 35 weeks on it's been 140-150/80-90.

My doctor said that it's something they'll definitely keep an eye on, but they start to worry more when the bottom number gets above 90. She also mentioned that it's more of an issue if it's always high, versus fluctuating between high-normal and high.

I went into triage late Tuesday night because I hadn't felt the baby all day (everything turned out fine with him), and they decided to do some blood work while I was there and asked me to do the 24 hour urine sample. These were to check for platelet and protein counts. If you're concerned, maybe you can ask to have some lab work done.

ETA- I missed that you already had blood work done. They asked me to do the urine catch because sometimes the small sample given at appointments doesn't always catch protein. It seems like they're just playing it safe and ruling things out, which is good.
