The thought of chocolate covered bacon literally makes me shudder with revulsion! However, I can see why some people would the like combo: the whole salty/sweet thing. Just the concept of bacon is horrifying to me-you're just gnawing on a strip of fat! I once saw a place in Texas featured on Travel Channel's Deep Fried Paradise. They had chicken fried bacon on the menu. It came with a white gravy. Cause that's what bacon needs, more fat! I'd be tempted to ask if that dish came with a side of angioplasty!
Once touched by pain, you're not the same
But time can heal your heart again
So let the clouds that bring you down
Just fade away...
In some instances, homeschooling can be done correctly and be beneficial for the child..but for the most part I think it's just an awful idea brought on by slightly paranoid parents. If your child isn't getting everything they need from school, academically-speaking, then go ahead and supplement on your own or find a tudor. To me, it's rather foolish to pull a child from school completely and think they won't be lacking in some area (especially social).
Also, there should be stricter (more strict?) standards for parents to be allowed to homeschool a child. How can you teach your own child when you know nothing about the subjects being taught?
I completly agree. I'm one of the lucky cases where my parents pulled me out for a few years, but they're both teachers so mom tought some subjects during the day and dad helped us with Math and science in the evening. we had a local homeschool group where we all got together once a month for things like museum tours, orchistra tirps etc and had yearly state testing we all did together (kinda like SAT's)
DH's cousins on the other hand, were homeschooled by his aunt, who barely finished HS and didn't take any college classes. They basicly were just hanging around at home all day for several years, not really working through anything and even today they don't really apply themselves to much of anything education wise.
That being said, if our kids education is lacking, we'll add stuff at home.
This sounds like MIL and DH's younger brother (6th grade). He was failing all his classes (doesn't like to do work/hw ever, MIL is too lazy to do anything about it). She said his only option to not fail the grade was to do online home schooling. Alright whatever. A few weeks ago she needed help with his math homework and was freaking out since it was almost the end of the "year" and they had a lot of late assignments/tests to do. I'm really good at math, tutored in college, so I offered to help. When I got there MIL sat in the living room watching TV while I helped DH's brother in his room. I assumed she would have come in to try and learn too since she'd probably need to help him another time. Nope! And his brother completely ignored everything I was showing him and actually asked if I wanted him to stay in the room. I guess (the way DH's brother was talking) MIL was assuming I was just coming over to do the work. They hardly even knew how to work the program! Then I saw he had only earned 65 out of 400 point for the class and I was like 'seriously wtf?' There was no way for him to pass and I was just wasting my time.
Sorry that turned into a rant, it just really pissed me off. I do think home schooling is good for some families, but definitely not all. The parents actually have to put work in too! If not they are just setting their kids up for failure. It's really sad.
Ok I have a truly UO. I HATE that we own our house. If I had a choice I would have NEVER bought a house but DH bought it before we got together and now we are stuck with it. This stupid house feel like a brick weighing us down. There is something always wrong with it, we have to call an air condition guy at least once a year and the plumbers at least 2-3 times a year. We live in fuckings no where and we are stuck here because the market is terrible and we can't afford two mortgages.
I wish we rented so I could just call someone else to come fix this crap for me so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
Owning your own home was the old American dream, I feel like it is time to re-evaluate that idea of the dream and move on to something new.
I wish we rented so I could just call someone else to come fix this crap for me so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
At 32 years old, DH and I are still renting for a number of reasons, mainly because I don't want to buy a house before I get tenure at my university, 'cuz if I don't, I don't want to be saddled with a house I can't unload. It is sooooo nice to be able to call our landlord to come fix stuff. I will definitely miss it, regardless of how many people tell me that we're "throwing money away" by renting.
ETA... that last part about renting at my age and "throwing away money" may very well be a UO.
My dh got tenure 2 years ago and he bought this house 5 years ago for all the reasons you mentioned but we both hate owning our own home. lol He is 44 now but we would both go back to renting in a heartbeat if we could get way from this house. Its so not worth all the bother.
It is a nice enough house, 3bed 3 bath with a decent sized yard but we just aren't happy with the area. There is seriously only 2 grocery stores here, Wm and a local chain.
I will never understand suicide. I know this is a touchy subject but a 17 year old boy who is a junior at my sister's high school ( my sister graduates on Sunday) committed suicide in his basement Saturday night. They live very close to my parents house and he use to come over and play basketball all the time. Seemed like a very likeable kid. Now the last week of school the small town is in shock. The town I live in only has 3,000 people and the high school only around 400 at most. Its just awful. Every time I log into facebook I see people posting about him. I am friends with some of my sisters friends on facebook.
I don't think this is that unpopular. Most people can't understand suicide. My dad took his own life in January of 2011 and I still can't/probably never will understand it. The fact that we don't understand it probably means we're in a healthy frame of mind and just can't grasp the frame of mind that they were in at that moment. Suicide is hard...being left behind is harder.

I absolutely hate the combination of chocolate and peanut butter. It makes me gag, always has. Especially Reeses PB cups. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one on the planet that thinks this.
I. AM. HORRIFIED! I think chocolate and PB is one of the best combos! Then again, I hate bacon, so to each her own!
So do I!! Finally someone who get it!
Absolutely! Don't you feel like a freak telling people you hate bacon? People look at me like I'm deranged!
YES !!! I means it's not that hard to get around...I had more people give me grief about not eating pork (any product) or beef (any product)...ppl really look at you crazy then...especially at a cookout

OMG! You're not alone. I hate it too!!! ((high five))
Also, I can't stand when people keep their name choices to themselves before the baby is born. I get it - you don't want to hear people's opinions or whatever. But do you really think I'll be on the edge of my seat waiting for you to share your secret??
We're not sharing our name choice. I don't expect people to be waiting on the edge of their seat - I just don't want to tell because 1. I don't want other people's opinions and 2. I don't want to feel like I have to use that name just because I've shared it.
I'm late as always. I smile every time I see a boy' s name made girl's name post. It makes me nuts when I'm getting a new child and I have no idea what sex this child is based on his or her name.
My UO is if you want a boy or girl, that's fine but it should never be spoken after the child is born. We have a mom in my room who asked me what I'm having. I said I didn't care either way so we were waiting. She said, "Make sure you mean that. We waited and I really wanted a boy. What a shock to get in the delivery room!". Um... That's not funny considering your GIRL is standing right there!

I'm from MN, and they actually have chicken fried bacon on a stick, served with a white sauce at the State Fair. My brothers had it the first year it was offered, because they like to be disgusting, I guess. They loved it, but also felt like dying/taking a nap about an hour later. They passed on it last year.

I agree with renting being "throwing your money away". You get nothing in return but a roof over your head, you can't sell that "roof" and get the money back so its just gone. We will be homeowners in about a month and while I know the expenses can suck I can't wait to have something that is my own and no one can tell me what to do with.
I hate seeing parents at Wal-Mart or Target past 10 pm with their kids. I occasionally go do the grocery shopping by myself then, (especially around birthdays or holidays) and hate seeing droopy-eyed toddlers at the store. I'm sure there are excuses for it, but I still don't like it.
I only do this if I ran out of Children's Tylenol or some sort of medicine I need NOW & DH is not home.

Is it odd that I hate Reeses PB cups, but love Reeces Pieces??
