Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

yard sale question

I'm having a yard sale (never had one before) & I have no idea on pricing a few things. I have a couple ofpush toys that have faded & & aren't bad looking. DS doesn't play with them very much anymore but I have no idea how much to ask for them. A friend gave them to us & DS has gotten over them. He has 5 other push/yard toys. Suggestions would be great!

Re: yard sale question

  • Price to sell. You either want to get rid of this stuff or not. I think many people price thier garage sale items too high.

It's a garage sale. Not a high end childeren's cosignment shop.

I bought one of those colorful wodden wire/bead things at a garage sale. It was priced at $5, which I thought was ridiculas.

Me: "Would you take $1 for this?" ($5 for a used toy? Seriously?)

    Her: "How about $3"

Me: (trying not to laugh b/c $3 was still too much IMO). "How about $1 and I take this off your hands."

    Her: "Sold."

All of this!  Think about how much YOU would pay for the item at a yard sale, and price that way.

  • My MIL gets tons of stuff for DD at garage sales.  She pays $0.25 for awesome electronic toys (Vtech, Fisher-Price, LeapFrog, etc.) and the most expensive thing she got was a LeapFrog exersaucer that was marked at $7 - she paid somewhere between $3-5 for it (think a $125 item in stores, in great shape).  For push toys, I'd probably say like $2-3 and expect to be haggled down to $1? Maybe?

  • I wouldnt pay more than a couple dollars for a push toy.  If this tells you anything, I got a jumperoo, highchair, and little outdoor car thingy all from one lady last summer for 15 dollars. lol

  • If you want any kind of money for something, try Craigslist first. At yard sales, people practically want everything for free.

I don't care to make a bunch of $. Like I said a friend gave them to us but I don't want to store these old faded toy for the next baby.

In that case, I'd price to sell.  No more than $1 or $2 for most smaller baby items.

If this is one of those big $50 wooden blocks I am thinking of, then I think $5 is reasonable.  We had a yard sale this past weekend and I priced every piece of clothing at $1.  I still had some people sigh when I told them the price.  I guess they just wanted me to hand them a bag full of mint condition summer clothes for a nickel.

I realize that it is a garage sale, but I am not going to fold and organize two huge totes of kids' clothes and then sit in the raging sun for 5 hours to make just barely enough money to buy myself an ice cream.

OP - If something is in great condition, then price it at maybe 20% of the original price.  Used condition...maybe $2-3.
