gift for shower hostesses

I have three best friends throwing me a shower and I just can't figure out what to get them as a gift. I realize it could be anything but I guess I'm curious what you guys are doing for this. Any ideas to get the idea wheel going would be much appreciated. I just really suck at giving gifts, I generally just ask people what they want for something if I'm going to get them a gift and then I get them exactly that. I can't exactly do that with this and I don't want it to be lame and generic because they are my best friends, but I also can't spend too much money... Just trying to get some ideas. Thanks!

  • My sister is throwing my first shower next Saturday and I think I may get her a pretty platter or some kind of entertainment/serving piece.  I don't think it needs to be a lot of money but she can always use the gift again because she obviously entertains people! Even something as simple as their favorite type of wine with a wine topper or wine bag is something tasteful and thoughtful, yet inexpensive.

Personalized trays, you can get cute ones on etsy for $20-$40.

We love games as do most of our friends so I do Tiffany & Co playing cards as gifts a lot. $30 for a box of 2 decks.

Do all 3 friends have similar tastes or do you want the gifts tailored to what they like individually?

A gift I just gave to DD's daycare teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week seemed to go over well and doesn't cost much.  As teachers of 2yr olds who need caffeine and who just got a new breakroom I bought a bunch of different coffee and tea items from Target--flavored coffees, Via packs, creamer, tea bags, honey, hot cocoa, etc and put them in a decorative bowl with some tissue paper.  Looked really fun, easy to put together, and can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you want to make it. Plus since you put it together it looks more thoughtful than some crappy store-bought gift basket. Her teachers all raved about it for days and it seemed to be "The Gift" they all enjoyed.

Find something your friends are into: coffee, books, bath supplies, chocolate, whatever--and use your creativity find some related items and build your own basket.  They will love it, and it shows you put some thought into it without breaking the bank.

  • I don't know what the proper etiquette is, but I just wrote thank you notes.  I think my hostesses would have felt weird if I'd spent money on a gift for them.  Then again it was my mom and two sisters so I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • My MIL threw me a baby shower for my DD and I sent her flowers the following Monday.

  • I think this is another thing that has popped up over the last few years.  When I got married, I never would have thought to get a hostess gift for either of the people who threw me showers.  Nor have I ever received a gift from the 8, yes 8 showers I've thrown.

I think it's unnecessary.  It's a great gesture if you want to do it, but I certainly don't think it's mandatory.

That's what I did for 3 of my friends who threw me a shower for DS-Vista print was awesome and relatively cheap. For the shower that my mom and sister threw, I did an "April Showers Bring May Flowers" theme since DS was due in May and my shower was in April. Bath and Body Works stuff, a loofah, a cute umbrella!
