5-month old activities?

Ladies, I am seriously running out of material to keep these girls entertained. They are getting bored with my bag of tricks (I admit I've been using the same ones for about a month now...). I'll share what I do if you'll share what you do/did with your LOs at around this age :)

We do:

Walks outside in the stroller

Practicing standing and sitting with me holding them

Sitting in their bouncy chairs while I read a book to them

Lying on their activity mat playing with the hanging toys

Tracking a toy that I move around in front of them

Chowing down on teething toys

Tummy time- looking at me/each other/activity mat toys

Watching me make coffee/do dishes from their bumbos (a surprisingly popular activity)

  • That age is rough! I'd do lots of baths -just get in with them and put them between your legs to help them sit up. We waste a LOT of time in the tub!

You can also use the pack and play and string play rings across and hang toys from them, making a BIG play gym, which has entertained all of mine pretty well.

Have you tried Baby Einstein? I know that many people say it's just a simple way of having the TV babysit your kids, but my girls have all done little stints of BE here and there and it's been a lifesaver. None of them were really interested after they were mobile, but it's a lot of fun for ones who are just hanging out in their bumbos.

I know this period seems like it'll never end, but you have mere WEEKS before they're totally different kids and are entertaining themselves better.

Sounds like what we do! Mine are only awake for about 2 hours at a time, so we kind of rotate through activities. They do one thing for 15-20 min. before getting cranky. The playmat with the hanging toys/music mobile has been the most popular thing with them.

They've also just started looking at each and "talking". I often have them facing each other during tummy time (propped up in boppies) and it seems to extend the time they're willing to stay on their stomachs.

Kiwi is absolutely right. We generally have "stations" in the house for the little ones and we just more them from one thing to the next. Swing, bouncer, play gym, tub of water, tummy time, bumbo, etc. You might also re-evaluate they're sleep schedules and make sure they're on an optimal routine for their ages, which really helps as far as what they're prepared to sit through. My 13 month old is still doing 2 big naps each day and I find that when she's bored, it's because she's exhausted or hungry rather than out of activities. Have your girls started solids? If they can sit in their high chairs, you can always put a couple of blobs of baby food on their trays and let them suck it off their fingers and slime it around.

  • I would highly recommend getting a jumperoo and/or and exersaucer.  My boys love them and started using them around that age.  While some might not agree with letting your kids watch TV, Baby Einstein is a saving grace around our house.  We call it baby crack.  I just let them watch it in short intervals while they are playing or fussy and bored of everything else.

This. My boys spend a lot of time in their exersaucer and jumperoo. We started using them around 4 months and they LOVE them. They stay entertained in them much longer than anything else.

We started sitting them in the jumperoo last week and gently making it go up and down, and just yesterday DD2 started jumping away.  DD1, on the other hand, fell asleep.  They are ambivalent to the exersaucer.

My girls are like yours - they LOVE sitting in their bumbos while we do dishes, make a batch of formula, or do other things around the kitchen.  Probably because we're constantly talking to them and making funny noises and faces, but it's a great way for us to entertain them and still get stuff done after work.

Have you tried reading to them at all?  Mine aren't into it when I read to them, but apparently they love my mom reading to them.  They also still like being in the swing and diaper changes take about 15 minutes each because they love to play while they're on the changing table (peekaboo, blowing on their bellies, etc.).

  • Thanks everyone! I had been putting off buying more baby gear for as long as possible, but maybe it's time to start checking out craig's list again... :)
