SAHM

Will you be leaving work to become a stay at home mom or will you be returning to work once your LO is born?

~Caleb~ If i could have a lifetime wish, a dream that would come true, I'd pray to God with all my heart, for yesterday and you. D&E 8/24/2012 EDD 1/28/2013 ___________________________________________________ Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: SAHM

  • I plan on being a SAHM. I am excited about being one, but a bit nervous about it being hard to find a job in the future.

  • I went back to work after maternity leave with DD and will again after this LO is born.  I really enjoy my job and I also make over half our income so staying at home is not really an option for me if we want to continue our current lifestyle which we do.  Also now that DD is 2.5 I really don't think I'd have the patience to be home all day everyday.  She's crazy lol!  Amazing but nuts!  I would LOVE it if I could work part time but still would want to make what I make now lol!

With DS I went back to work full time when he was 16 weeks old.  But, I'm leaving my current job at the end of July to be a SAHM because my DH accepted a job promotion that will require us to move 1200 miles away.

Thankfully we're moving to a much lower COL state than NJ (umm... pretty much every state is cheaper than NJ!) so we'll be able to swing the single-income thing.  I'm a graphic designer so I can always pick up a freelance gig here and there if I miss working or if we need some extra cash (hello, vacation fund!).

  • I think I'll be a SAHM. We'll be moving overseas when LO is about 2 months and I'm not sure I'd trust anyone to take care of LO in a new culture.

  • The plan right now is for me to go back to work part-time after my 3 months of maternity leave. If DH has his way, I won't go back to work at all. So we'll just wait and see.

  • Since our parents are both rather far away, thats not a child care option. After doing some math, I would be bringing home only a few $Ks more to keep working after putting a baby in childcare. Not worth it. SAHM has always been my dream.

  • I've been giving this a lot of thought since we first decided to start trying for a LO... right now I make over 1/2 our income and it's just not financially feasible for us, I'd like to eventually at least go down to part-time. My agency is also supposedly rolling out an extended telework option (work from home up to 4 days/week), so whenever that happens I'll be working from home much more often as well.

    Dear Baby Pacheco...
  • I've never had the desire to stay home and financially it wouldn't work out. I like working and enjoy the socialization. I don't think I have the patience to stay at home and give a lot of credit to the moms that can! My DH on the other hand, would love to stay home. BUT like I said earlier, not financially possible.

I make 40% of our income, and waaay more than the cost of daycare, so there isn't much reason for me to stop working.  My mom was a SAHM, and she was psycho, so I can't imagine following in her footsteps--I've always figured I wouldn't stay sane as a SAHM.  I also like my job--its interesting, has flexible hours, I usually work a max 40 hour work-week, and I can work from home 1-2 days a week.

  • i'll be going back to work after mat leave....

dh and i make about the same, but neither one of us makes enough to live on as the only income....it'll be close, but we wouldn't be able to afford or our or day care if only one of us worked

i'd love to be able to work from home once or twice a week (tried to negotiate for it when we moved offices about half an hour further from my house but that didn't work)...not like i think it'll cut down on day care much or at all, but we'll see

my sister is a sahm, but next sept her kids will both be full time students...not sure if she's going back to work or not...but i'm hoping she might be able to help while we try to figure out day care stuff

as mentioned before...nj is pretty expensive :(

I will be returning to work.  My job is a bit different, in that I travel a lot and then work from my home office when not in the field.  I'll have to figure out the travel scenario for sure, but we can't give up 50% of our income for me to stay home.

With the way my job is I'll probably end up semi-working, on conference calls, etc...pretty quickly after the LO is born.  Not even sure 3 months of traditional maternity leave is an option (I know legally it is, but realistically speaking) for me.  There are only 3 of us in my division covering the entire country.  Sad  Which reminds me I'm going to have to tell my boss soon.....dreading that!

  • I work part time, so I'll be returning to that pretty quickly. I teach mostly online classes. I'm planning on getting a full time teaching gig when DS is 4 and this baby is 1.5.

  • Ideally, I will work part time.  But finding a part time job that pays well is another story.  DH is not crazy about me working part time but working full time is super hard with one, and adding two would just magnify that.  I don't think I'd stay sane.

  • I stopped working at the end of my last pregnancy, and never went back to work. We thought we would have another child sooner so we figured I'd just stick to the SAHM plan. I don't plan on going back to work now that I'm pregnant again so I will be staying home.
  • I will continue to SAH.
  • Left work to be a SAHM with DS. Love it and so happy that I can do it.

  • It depends on what our financial situation looks like when DH gets out of the army. I would LOVE to be a SAHM and do school but I don't know if that'll be possible. I'm thinking I might have to work p/t. Right now, hell no. I have to work so we can make ends meet but if we pay off most of our bills before the baby gets here we could be sittin pretty!

  • I'd really like to be a SAHM, but at this time, I don't think we'll go down that route. Financially, we'd be able to, but things would always be tight.

I'm currently a teacher. IF I continue to teach this next year, I'll go back after maternity leave. However, it would likely be my last year teaching for a while. I would need to find something else for work. I don't think I'd be a good mother or teacher with a baby at home.

However, I'm currently in the process of trying to get a job with a curriculum/publishing company. I have my second interview today! If I get this job, they have amazing benefits and after time, you're able to work from home a couple days a week. I'd also be making close to twice what I make now, which wouldn't hurt either. :)

  • I quit my job in March because I was miserable and it was not worth the pay at all.  Between vacation in April and wanting a break, I just started job searching before I got my BFP and we decided it was not practical for me to return to work.  My m/s is so bad that it is not practical to start a new job right this second and then it seems silly to start job searching when I am visibly pregnant.  Even if I got hired today I would not qualify for leave with most companies and the pay probably would not be worth it when I figure in cost of day care.  I used to be very career driven, but now I know I want to stay home.

  • I will be returning to work. The plan was eventually for me to SAH.  Then earlier this year DH left his horrible job to take a new higher paying one. The new job then laid him off after 1.5 weeks, telling him he was too qualified for the position. Luckily he found a new job that he LOVES within 3.5 weeks of losing his job, however, those 3.5 weeks were scary ones. I can't imagine not working now. Plus, DS is THRIVING in daycare.

  • I'm working a temporary job right now while I finish school. I'm (hopefully) starting my 12 week internship in the fall. Though we're happy about the little bundle, the timing could have been better. Unless the place I intern with wants to hire me afterwards I can't imagine that it would be easy to find a job at 7 months pregnant!

I fully intend to begin my career shortly(ish) after this LO is born, as much as I wish I were, I'm just not built to be a SAHM.

  • I'll go back to work. We need the money and I really do get joy out of being a teacher (although sometimes, like today, I want to rip my hair out!) I'd miss my 115 students each year!
  • Right now I live in CO and I work in a chiropractic office and I work 1 day a week at a gym (free membership). My husband is getting out of the military and we are moving back to CA the end of July and I am going to transfer to the gym there and just work 1-2 shifts a week. I only have to work 1 shift a week to qualify for insurance so my husband can use his GI Bill to go back to school :) It's going to be so nice to be able to stay home so much so I can actually breastfeed!!

I went back to my teaching job 12 weeks after having my daughter. I didn't think that I would want to be a SAHM, but those last 7 months of the school year were awful. I didn't feel like I was being the best mom to my daughter, or the best teacher to my students. At the end of the year I decided to SAH. This year I did tutor at my former school 8 hours a week which was nice. My cousin watched my daughter while I did that. This year she will be in Mother's Day Out so I may tutor again, and I also plan on tutoring from home in the evenings. I like to feel like I'm contributing financially, even if it's just a little bit.
