3rd Trimester

What are you taking for heartburn? No more tums for me.

Just curious what you are all taking for heartburn.  My iron supplement says no antacids and I just realized this.  Now it makes sense that my iron is still going down.  I don't take a ton of Tums, maybe 2-3 a day, but will need to switch to something else.  Any suggestions?

My OB put me on 20mg of Pepcid AC twice a day for mine b/c the tums were actually lowering my iron levels quite a bit. Now I have zero heartburn and way more energy. Love it!

  • the only thing that works for me right now is Zantac 150. One pill and my heartburn is gone in about 20 minutes.

Aloe juice (filtered fillet of leaf) from Whole Foods. I've been taking it for months and it's the only thing that's worked.
  • I take 150mg of ranitidine once a day (I can take it twice but for now, once is enough).

  • I don't get it all that bad so I don't take anything for it, but I asked my midwife "just in case." They recommended a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar if it's just once in a while, or papaya enzymes with meals if it's an all the time problem.  Like I said, I haven't tried either, but I've heard tons of positive feedback on the papaya enzymes.

  • I got a Rx for Ranitidine that I took once before breakfast and once before dinner. Worked like a charm.

  • I'm on Zantac 150mg 1-2 times per day.  It is fine to take after first tri and is okay to take with my thyroid meds, whereas Tums can interfere with my thyroid meds.

I'm glad someone else mentioned this! I've been drinking a little packet of vinegar to help with acid. I swear, it works for me. I've got a stash of white vinegar packs from McDonald's, so it's not Apple Cider... works the same though.

Same here.  It's what my doctor used during her pregnancy too (just had her baby last week).  It's good because I can just use it when I need it and it works....I don't have to wait for it to build up in my system.

  • I've had super bad heartburn (it was already bad before I got pregnant) and honestly, the best remedy I've found is just a glass of milk.  It stops it instantly and makes it go away completely, and hey, I love milk.  Sometimes I'll even make it chocolate milk if I'm feeling particularly icky.
