breech baby, breech baby

First of all, i've been on non-stop work mode (imagine that!) SO this is, I think, my first time logging on in about 2 weeks - it's nice to have a bit of breathing room today!

Secondly - the reason for my post is that at our prenatal class last night, the doctor noted that the baby is currently head up, feet out to the right (which I can feel, as it feels like shes trying to burrow out of the space between my right hip and lower rib cage) in a sort of pike position, and that she "should" be head down at this point, and has two weeks (until our next appointment) to figure it out before they send us for additional ultrasounds and start considering what happens if she doesn't flip.

She suggested lots of walking and bouncing - does anyone else have any tips or tricks they've heard?  Totally understood that it's mostly wives tales, it's really nothing we can control, and she could turn really late - apparently the later it gets, the less likely though, as this is the phase where baby's packing on the pounds and losing her wriggle room.

Thanks!

jenn

Re: breech baby, breech baby

  • There's plenty PLENTY of time for the baby to flip...and flip and flip and flip. I'm positive my LO is not head down...I think she's laying back down. Other days she's back up, feet and hands towards the hoo hah.

  • Honestly babies can turn right up until the end.  I heard spin.com or something has techniques to try (Im sure other posters will know exact site- I see ppl recomend it all the tie on here) .  I also read- never had IRL experience if you take pepermint oil and place on top of stomach baby will smell the pepermint oil abd turn around- not sure if its true- but worth a try.

Honestly I woudlnt worry quite yet.

  • Babies flip almost until the end.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • My DD was breech...I think I waited too long to begin trying to turn her, b/c nothing worked.  Here's what we tried:  Cat movements, inversion table, webster procedure (via chiropractor), two external cephalic versions.  The first version was done without pain medication - ow! - and the second was done with an epidural, cesarean followed immediately after.  There are a couple posts about it in my blog (LIS).

  • Thanks :)

I've been googling it a bit this afternoon too -

apparently this is my big chance to lay on my back with my crotch in the air with a bag of frozen peas on my diaphragm and my ipod headphones blaring tunes into my undies - bonues points if I light a scented candle between my legs - haha.

Peppermint oil sounds lovely, tho!  I might just do that anyway...

Hahaha, never tried any of those tactics...maybe that's why my kid never turned.

Yup, pleeenty of time to flip still.

DS flipped to breech at 37w. Nice, huh? I was scheduled for a c-section then at 38w. Check out spinningbabies.com for different things you can do.

A friend told me about a trick she had heard about and figured to give it a try. Get some peppermint essential oil and rub some on your upper belly where the head is. Apparently they can smell it and don't like the smell so they try to turn away from it. I put it on my belly one night before going to bed (after 4 days of trying all the other positions/moves from spinningbabies) and in the morning he was head down. Obviously I can't say for sure if that's what did it, but I always say it can't hurt to try :)

  • I was reading about turning methods somewhere recently...it seems to me that seeing a chiropractor trained in the Webster technique had the most success with the least amount of risk.  Our doula gave strict instructions to sit up straight, even when sitting on the couch, to help baby have the most room to turn, she suggested cat/cow postures (I don't know if you've taken any prenatal yoga classes, but it is pretty standard fare in every one I've been to!), she suggested inversion if we get to about 32 weeks and baby isn't head down yet.  She also has us doing "belly sifting" using a mexican scarf called a rebozo...I actually saw them do this on a tv show once :)

Agree with PPs that there is still plenty of time for the baby to turn head down.  Please check out www.spinningbabies.com for recommended positions/practices for getting baby to turn.  Also you might consider seeing a prenatal chiropractor certified/trained in Webster's technique.  It is great for helping LO into head-down position, as well as relieving hip/back/pelvic arch pain during pregnancy.  I saw a chiro with DS, and I start seeing one for this pregnancy next week.  I'm looking forward to the adjustments!

  • I am expecting twins and they are both breech. My OB told me they might stay breech or they might turn just depends on the babies!
