What does sleep training really mean

I think I am a little confused. Can someone please define sleep training for me?

Re: What does sleep training really mean

  • My loose definition: teaching your child how to sleep well. That means how to fall asleep on their own (without any sleep associations such as paci, rocking, nursing, etc.), therefore knowing how to fall back asleep on their own in the middle of the night and following a schedule.

  • Ditto the PPs. One common misconception is that it means you don't go in to feed your baby when they wake up. That is not the case. My son still gets up once per night to eat and then I put him down while he's still awake and I walk away. He rolls over and falls asleep on his own. But if he wakes, let's say, 4 hours after falling asleep, I do not go in. I wait for him to fuss it out and put himself back to sleep which takes less than 10 minutes these days.

  • It is confusing, because I think it means different things to different people. To me, it's very simple.

It means I put my baby down awake, when he shows signs of being tired. Then he falls asleep on his own. It means when he fusses, I don't rush to him to pick him up. It means at 2:00 a.m., just because I hear him fussing or crying a bit, I don't rush to him, because I know that we all wake up and fuss, even adults, and if someone picked me up, I would be MAD:)
