Cloth Diapering

Vinegar in every load??

I finally solved my stink problem with my microfiber inserts-by using funk rock in my initial cycle, then a heavy duty cycle with 1 1/2 scoops tiny bubbles and 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse. All followed with another cold wash/rinse cycle.  Can I continue to use the vinegar in every cycle, or should I just do it once a week??  Or just when I notice the smell??

Re: Vinegar in every load??

  • I do vinegar in my second of three rinses in every diaper load.  My routine is a quick wash on hot with a scoop of detergent, then a heavy duty cycle on hot with a scoop of detergent.  During each initial fill-up and each rinse fill-up, I add extra water to my front loader via a hose from my sink.  It's a pretty involved process, but the extra water makes a huge difference.  When I don't add vinegar, I notice the diapers don't seem quite as fresh.  I've heard the vinegar can contribute to the wear and tear on the diaps, but it's worth it to me.

  • I have hard water so I cannot use vinegar--tried it, major stink issues as a result.

  • Vinegar can eat away at PUL and elastic if used too often. I would try to use it sparingly. I do a hot vinegar wash about once a month to get rid of ammonia stink.

I have been using vinegar in my initial cold soak/rinse cycle for about 6 - 8 months (when I started getting stink in my MF) and it is working really well.  (I also strip with Dawn occasionally.) The PUL is still holding up well on our pockets, which I've been using for a year.

  • I use vinegar about 2 times per month, smell is kept down, and I don't worry about breaking down my CD's.
