Rough exam?

I went to the doctor on Thurs, I was 38 wks 1 day. My baby is already measuring big, and I have had horiffic asthma attacks including pneumonia during this pregnancy, so she offered to induce me at 39 weeks. After some careful consideration, I decided that I wanted to wait and see if she comes on her own so I declined to schedule one.

Of course later that night, I'm thinking that my doctor might have stripped my membranes. She told me during the exam that she was going to "try to help me out" because I am only a fingertip dialated and my cervix was still very high and thick...and we were both nervous about having to induce me even after 40 weeks.

Since then, I have had many more BH contactions, and noticed a small brown discharge when I would use the restroom. This morning I had alot of brown discharge continuing all morning....and from what I've read, I think that this might be the mucus plug!! Whatever she did, she knocked something loose in there it seems, and I'm wondering if I will have to drive through this tropical storm coming to FL to go L&D this weekend!!

question: Did anyone lose their mucus plug right before labor..or did it still take days or weeks? Right now I just walked around our county fair and I am feeling some serious cramps :/

Re: Rough exam?

  • I am interested to see what others say on this. I had my first cervix check on Wednesday and am having similar symptoms, although I know the doctor didn't strip my membranes yet. I just figured it was routine spotting.

  • I thought the same thing until this morning when it significantly increased.
  • When I was checked, I was told that I would bleed like crazy for a while and that it would go from red to pink to brown. It took 3 days but it did exactly that.

  • I was checked a couple of days ago and my doc said that the MP may come out. I don't think it is because of the exam.

If she had stripped your membranes, you would be bleeding and it hurts a LOT (the cervical check hurts too, but stripping is way worse).

I've also been about 1/2-1 cm my past two appts. Both times, my OB has said she just barely can't fit her finger through--she's trying to manually stretch me as much as possible, and she's not stripping membranes since she can't get through. I've also had brown discharge. It's dried blood from the internal.  She and my doula said to expect some crampiness and BH because she tried to manually stretch me.

  • my old OB tried to manually stretch me from a fingertip and I will tell you it hurt like hell. You would know. no matter what, if she did strip your membranes yes you should see mucous and maybe blood, but it doesn always mean labor.

Sex works...did for both my kids. Semen is a cervical softner, go for it. ;)

  • I didn't have my membranes swept, but when my mucus plug came out with DD, it was pretty obvious. It looked like a big, blood tinged blob of snot. I was in early labor at that point with mild contractions. DD was born 15-16 hours later.

  • thanks for the input. The exam did hurt alot, enough for me to yell lol. I'm not sure exactly what she meant by "helping me out". I did have the brown discharge at first which I wrote off, but this morning it was large chunks of brown mucus, it was in bottom of the toilet (sorry for TMI) and it still seems to be coming here and there. Each time it was about the size of a nickel. Also when I use the restroom I can see some light pink as well when I wipe. Nothing painful as of yet, so I suppose it's like the rest of these weeks, we'll have to wait and see, but with no changes this whole time, it did give me some hope that maybe I can avoid an induction :)
