Mattress for bassinet in Chicco Lullaby LX Playard?

Right now we are planning on using the Chicco Playard in our room for the baby to sleep at night for the first few months (if anyone has another recommendation I am all ears...).

Do I need a mattress for the bassinet? I am getting pretty freaky about the organic mattress thing, and would rather buy my own, but if it's already included, I guess maybe we'll just get a cover for it. All of the talk about SIDS being related to off-gassing from mattresses, etc, has me nervous. Yes, I know, crazy paranoid mom-to-be!

Re: Mattress for bassinet in Chicco Lullaby LX Playard?

  • It comes with a Playard mattress. It's not made for an actual mattress to go in there. If you want to put additional sheets on it, the one for the Go Crib fits nicely.

  • You shouldn't add any kind of mattress or pad to a bassinet that wasn't included by the manufacturer.  I'm sure it says this in the manual and on the PNP.  They are made to a specific size and thickness and anything else could be unsafe.  Doing things like that probably puts your baby at a higher risk of suffocation than supposed off-gassing from the included mattress.

  • It's not a "mattress" at all.  It is just a hard piece of wood covered in a thick quilt looking material. We had the the Chicco one and a Baby Trend one and the Chicco was a much softer area for baby to lay on.  Also the changing table was amazing!!

  • I'm thinking about using this as a bassinet as well and just wondering if you have now used it and if it worked well?  Thanks - and congratulations!
