DS won't burp - what to do?

DS is 5 weeks today.  After a bottle, he rarely burps.  I've tried everything and he usually burps about 5% of the time and always ends up with horrible gas.

I need help!  Suggestions?

Re: DS won't burp - what to do?

  • How long do you try to burp him for?  Do you rub kind of hard as well as patting?  I dont stop until S burps because he will also have gas and always gets out a big one eventually

  • I breastfeed, but I have this same problem.

  • Have you tried the baby milkshake? You hold them on their bottom and at their chest/chin and gently bounce up and down. We do this with J when he hasn't burped from normal burping and laying him on his tummy to burp with no results

  • I try for about 15 minutes before I quit.  DS is usually asleep by that time anyway.  Also, I have tried every position that I can think of, patting all over his back, rubbing, etc.  Since he's learning to make sounds he has been "fake" burping this week by making a sound when he should burp.  I don't know if he's trying to get one out and it doesn't come or what is going on with him making that noise.  It's so frustrating.
  • The only way I've been able to get successful burps lately is sitting facing me (once I can get him to finally sit down) and I bounce my legs. I think it works similar to the milkshake burping, but I've never tried that specifically.

  • Make sure when you are burping him on your shoulder that his belly is up on your shoulder so that it sort of puts pressure on his stomach while you pat and rub. Good luck.

  • Have you tried the exercise ball? we sit and bounce on that while holding him over the shoulder.

This is what we have success with too.
