Mommies to 27 weekers: come in!

Hey everyone, I've never really posted my birth story of my twins on this board but my twins, Londyn Rae and Zayden James, were born at 27w3d due to unexplained reasons.  They were in the NICU for 78 days.  My son, Zayden, was born at 2lb 7oz and my daughter, Londyn, was born at 2lb 2oz.  They had breathing issues like any other preemie at that age and had 2 blood transfusions each during their stay but that was the extend of it thankfully.

They are now 9 months old (6 adjusted) and are doing wonderfully.  I am just checking in with other mothers that gave birth to 27 weekers.  My twins are not crawling yet and are not sitting up on their own.  They definitely are trying hard to though!  They both have great head control.  Just seeing what to expect within these next few months for those of you that have been in my position before!!

Thanks.

  • Hi, my boys were 28 weekers.  Just a little older than your twins.  Remember that you have to base developmental milestones on adjusted age, not actual age.  My twins didn't really sit up unsupported until 7 months adjusted and they are not crawling yet either, but starting to get close to it.

Are your twins getting any therapy or early intervention?  You may also try asking on the preemie board for more responses as there aren't as many early preemie moms who post on this board.

  • I didn't have preemies, but your twins sound like they are hitting their milestones for adjusted age.  Also, crawling is not a milestone, some babies never crawl and just walk.

At 6m my babies were just starting to sit unassisted...but only lasts for about 15seconds without toppling over.  Not until 7months did they really sit good.  Even at 8m and now they occasionally lose their balance and tip over.  Especially if they get all excited and shake their hands and head in the air.  It's funny.  Oh my co-workers baby is 7m and he doesn't even sit by himself yet.  He's a bit behind, only because I think his parents are not practicing with the baby.

My son didn't crawl until 9.5 months and he wasn't a preemie.

Glad your babies are healthy and they sound just perfect.
