Sleep terrors

Lo is starting to get them. She's had them a few times in the first month, but they're happening more frequently this week. She'll be sleeping peacefully, and then she'll start screaming hysterically and sobbing. I've read that it's caused by the brain having trouble transitioning between sleep cycles, and results in getting caught between the waking up and falling asleep triggers. supposedly you want to let her try to finish the transition and not to wake her ("teach" her brain to make a smooth transition rather than interrupting it), but sometimes she screams so hysterically that she's awake and it takes awhile to console her.

Anyone else experience this? What do you do?

Re: Sleep terrors

  • He doesn't scream, but he cries the saddest little cry!  It normally wakes him up, but he'll go back to sleep pretty easily.  I hate it when it happens!!

  • I don't really have any advice for you but I'm really glad you posted this. I'm pretty sure DD has this occasionally but every tells me I'm crazy because she's just a baby. When DD has it, she wakes herself up and cries for about an hour afterwards. She had it for a week straight about an hour after falling sleep.

  • My son used to scream and sob too! It was soooooooooooooo sad!

The first few times I'd run over and pick him up. He'd seem awake, but I'm not sure if he actually was. I mean, his eyes were open, but it was almost as if he was between the two. (Does that even make sense???) It would take forever to calm him down.

I also read to let them sleep, so I somehow willed myself to try it out. Amazingly, he just went back into a deep sleep; it felt like forever, but in reality probably only took a minute or two. And actually, he hasn't done it in the last few weeks! I hope whatever it is has stopped for good...

:( Hope your little one gets past it!

  • My friend had this with her DD (she had just turned 1) and she said that LO's are not awake even though they seemed to be awake.  She said her DD did not recognize her which was why she was so hard to soothe.

When she was going through this, I did some research and remember reading that it was associated with sleepwalking and not getting enough sleep/ being overtired.

  • I didn't think that maybe she wasn't really awake. I will try to stick it out next time and see if she sleeps. It's hard, though, because she sobs like she is having a panic attack.
