I think I was judged today

DH went back to work yesterday so I've been on my own the past 2 days. It poured yesterday and rained on and off all of today. Parks are out of the question because of the weather and I hate staying in the house w/ DD, I feel like she winds up watching way too much tv and we both get frustrated with stuff that we can't do or makes a huge mess (finger paint all the time, her nails 20 times, markers all over). I took her to Barnes and Noble this morning to play with the train table. There were 2 moms, with about 5 kids between the 2 of them who asked me how old DS was. When I said a week the one lady especially looked at me like I was out of my mind or putting him in some sort of serious danger being out of the house.

I'm not freaked out about germs and was out with DD often when she was young too (she's never had anything other than a cold). Do you think it's a big deal to take LO out in their stroller/ car seat so young?

I personally don't see a problem with it, we live in AZ and in the summer it is way to hot to do anything. I wanted to get of the house with the little one so we would go and walk around the mall. It was nice and cool and there where places to nurse him if I need to. I think you are doing fine! have fun!!

I had people give me odd looks when I took DS to church that young, but the looks were usually accompanied with comments about how impressive it was that I was out at all, so maybe they weren't judging, but were silently thinking how awesome you are for being up and around so soon. Smile

I had some weird looks at the aquarium when DD was 2 weeks. People are strange.

I got the same reaction from an older woman when DH took me (and Claire) out for breakfast when she was a week old.

I probably wouldn't have ventured out during flu season, but other than that I see nothing wrong with taking a newborn out of the house -- especially when you have a toddler to entertain!

I feel like with having a toddler and a newborn, there is no other option but to keep the toddler busy. Keeping DS1 cooped up in the house for days at a time is just not an option. With the 2nd baby I am definitely not as paranoid about germs, and I think I just realized that this kid is going to have to be more flexible.

Same thing happened to me when I took DD to the mall play area when she was 2 weeks old. DS needed to get out and play already! It was the middle of June, so not like it was prime cold/flu season.

DS was at the mall after his 1wk check up. It was February but I wasnt worried. It was during the day so it wasnt crowded and we just kept the canopy part up to discourage people from getting close. DD was out even sooner than that. I am a little jealous of your bravery for taking 2 out so quickly. I braved the grocery store when i just had to run in and grab something and even that took me 3wks to work up the courage to do that...

ITA. I've been out everyday since day 5. I have definitely been judged A LOT.

I had DS2 at my friend's daugher's bday party when he was 2wks old and someone there gave me a weird look when I said he was 2wks! Seriously, it's not a big deal! No one is licking their hand and touching your LO. You can't be stuck inside for months, especially when you have a toddler too! You're the mom, you know best. Who cares what other people think!

It's not a big deal. Honestly, it's only what you touch (or your DS) / then touch the baby. So if you keep your hands clean etc. it should not be an issue.

IMO it depends on the season. I would have done the same thing you did, though. With a toddler, there is no way you can't not do things. I judge those moms for being so judgey

My pedi said to keep baby away from sick ppl, especially on closed spaces. But she said open spaces are totally fine. My daughter is 2 weeks old and we have been out a lot. So I would trust your instinct and not worry about those ladies.

I was judged the other day too. So hot outside (90's) and husband out of town for 5 yes FIVE days and me at home recovering from my 2nd c section with a newborn and 3 year old. Went to the Disney Store at the mall to buy DS toy and a lady asks me how old my DD was and I said 2 weeks and she said "I don't think they're supposed to be out that young." I kinda rolled my eyes and was like well no one is touching her - we'll be fine."

btw she was snuggled up to me in a peanut shell. whatever.

We had ours out by 4 days. My two year old would go batty if I tried to confine her in the house. My older daughter is in daycare once a week and the baby has more of a chance of picking up something from her as opposed to going to the mall in a stroller where no one is touching her.

We kept her in for MAYBE the first week and a half. And five of those days were spent in the hospital.

You can't stay in the house all the time. You brought her to B&N. Not a heavy metal concert. Screw them.

My DS has been out and about on small trips since he got out the hospital. I just don't let others touch or breathe on him. He seems to enjoy the car trip and fresh air and so do I. I am not one for being couped up all day without going crazy.

Not at all. I took DS out during his first week home and never thought twice about it. I'm not used to being cooped up in the house so it helped me keep my sanity. Besides, as others have mentioned, it's really not feasible for you to stay inside when you also have a toddler.

Yeah people gave me looks ... I had mine out by about 5 days as well. Let them judge! My baby is better off being out than with a crazy cooped up mom at home. Oh and fwiw, at 2 months he LOVES being outside!!

We went to Disneyland yesterday with my niece and he was great all day. The lady at the baby care center said the youngest she'd seen there was 2 DAYS old ... now that's a bit crazy but to each their own.

We took DS to an outside arts festival at one month. One month. Not one day, or one week. A lady had the audacity to tell me we should still be keeping him inside. Indifferent

I didn't tell her he'd been going outside everyday since we brought him home...
