What are women doing 'down there?!?'

Ive been wondering this for awhile now, and as I get closer and bigger and further along in my pregnancy, I wanted to ask other pregnant women what they are doing---- So, my question is, : How are you ladies taking care of hair down there?! Ive been thinking of getting waxed, tried to bikini wax myself, and have considered just letting it be,...seeing as how I probably wont be able to reach or bend to shave or whatever in a few more weeks!!

Any suggestions, or opinions??

  • Full Brazilian wax. Keeps everything clean and all I have to do is show up to my appointment every 5-6 weeks. Simple.

But make sure you take two Tylenol before hand to reduce the pain/swelling.

I can barely handle waxing as is. With the extra blood flow & increased sensitivity I will not wax.

I've always shaved and had no issue reaching around last time & don't expect to have an issue this time. It's not perfect because obviousy I'm going by feel but it's good enough.

  • I trIed to give myself a high and tight about a month or two ago and ended up cutting the tip of my clit off. Go to a professional. Clits are WAYYY too important to take the risk. I don't believe that particular part of the body has an insurance disembodiment policy.... There is not enough money in the world....
  • Haha!  This is hilarious!  I've been wondering the same thing and have been meaning to post about it.  I'm about 20 weeks along and I'm starting to lose my view down south.  I've thought about trimming in front of a mirror for as long as I can, but not sure what to do after that.  I'm not really into waxing...  Never tried it, kind of freaked out by the idea.  It's even tougher since we are all going thru this during the summer months-bathing suit season.  Might have to recruit my hubby to help me out.  I'd love to hear what other women are doing for sure.
  • If I'm feeling ambitious I'll break out the electric razor. I'm not planning on swimming this summer, I'm on pelvic rest and I don't really care what it looks like for my Doctors.

I'm already measuring 5 weeks ahead so I figure why start something now that I probably won't be able to maintain for much longer - lol.

I, of course, am keeping everything smooth with the legs and underarms.

  • I just had my first brazilian ever. It was extremely painful, but I am really pleased with the results and will continue going from now on. I also got my lower abdomen waxed because I was a little self conscious about hair on my belly. Now I love looking at my belly!

  • I've always been a waxer, and have recently switched to a full brazilian (as of the month I got pregnant!) I'm sticking to that.
  • I'm still getting a Brazilian done for now... but I'm a big baby, and it hurts! LOL. I haven't cried yet...but if it gets that bad, I'm just giving up! LOL

I normally shave.  But since being pregnant I have been trimming it to a point where I can handle it.  As I am loosing most sight down there (I can barely see my toes now when I look down) I have been having DH help me.  He doesn't mind, he helped shaved my legs the last time they needed done.

Same here. I was kind of surprised that almost all the women (who have answered anyway) shave or wax! I mean, I don't want to look like a prepubescent little girl. I will however trim it when it gets too long and a little bit in the way and when it gets pulled, but that's different than shaving it all off.

  • I'm no longer shaving as I can't see down there anymore.  When it gets a little out of control I will take the trimmer to it.  This weekend we went to the beach and DH had to do a little shaving so that I could wear my bathing suit.  I've never waxed before, so don't think I'll be trying that for the first time while pregnant.

  • I also get a full brazilian wax, but every 3 weeks.  I don't go as much in the winter, but every three weeks in the spring/summer for bathing suit reasons, of course.  I avoid the ever-popular shaving bumps in the bikini line this way and get a deal with my salon.  I used to have a couple cocktails and anti-inflamatories beforehand, so I didn't feel a thing, but stopped shortly before finding out I was expecting trying to get used to it without any "enhancers".  Now, I take nothing and am perfectly fine.  I will keep going throughout my pregnancy.  It makes we feel better to know that's taken care of since shaving my legs looks like it's going to become more difficult in the coming weeks!

it's all exposed... but my waxer covers what she's not working on with a towel. It was awkward the first couple times, but the lady who does mine, goes out of her way to make it more comfortable... it's not so bad.

  • Since they wax from your belly button to your butt crack it pretty much gets seen anyways. I have had a paper thong at one place. More trouble than it's worth. Also read up on types of wax or get friends rec for a place to go.
  • Good question!! I've been shaving since for as long as I can remember and I continued with my first pregnancy. For some reason though, I've been having issues with ingrown hairs! It hurts like a b**** when I pull the hairs out and then I'm stuck with a red bump for a few days til it heals. I'm way too chicken to wax and I actually break out if I get my eyebrows waxed so I'm worried that I'll break out down there as well. I've heard conflicting stories about hair removal cream so I guess with all that said, I'll continue to shave just maybe not as frequently as I keep getting ingrown hairs.

  • Shaving with an electric trimmer to get it as short as possible.. not completely bare because I don't trust myself with razor blades in areas that I can't see.

That being said, I had my last adventure in trimming last week, which left me knicked in not so appetizing areas and bleeding, and I'm quite sure amusingly splotchy... I don't think I"ll be trying it again until after our LO is here!

From the many other posts on this topic that I've read over the last 8 or so months, the general consensus is that waxing hurts like a b!tch because you're generally swollen down there (though many people still do it), but it's worth it to keep yourself short to prevent all the discharge that you'll have after giving birth from getting stuck in the hair - some people enlist the help of DH, others use a mirror, and others blind shave while using touch to guide...

  • I love a good wax but personally I can't bring myself to drop the 60 or so bucks on my vajayjay and I'm terrified of how much worse it would hurt. I went and bought some Veet hair remover and it worked like a champ. I've also heard good things about Nair's new Brazillian spa clay hair remover. As for DH going down there with something sharp, Hell no!

  • I have a hard time waxing, I may not go for a full brazilian, but perhaps a "playkini mid way between brazilian and bikini.

If not, SO is ready to roll when it's time, "down there" and my legs. I am a little concerned at how excited he is.

  • i go to the european wax center and get a full or brazilian every 4 weeks.  tylenol 20-30 min before the apt helps with the redness/pain and then i'm clean for weeks at a time.  But i broke out too much shaving back in the day.  this has been my saving grace for over a year now!

  • Last time I just "maintained" the bikini edges by shaving until I couldn't reach which was only the last few weeks.  I'll be better about it this time since I'll be pregnant through the summer and in a swimsuit (it was fall-winter last time so there was no need for any major maintenance.

I've never waxed down there. I'll probably do it some day but it's not a big thing here in my small town and I don't even know where I would go to get one!

  • Ive had myu eyebrows and upper lip professionally done. My bikini area, My husband and I experiemented one night and it wasnt so bad lol. We bought those strips you get at wal-Mart, and warm up between your hands while u rub your hands together. Its really sticky, and I bled a little wee bit, but the pain isnt that bad,...thats why I was wondering about brazillian... if I can handle ME doing my own bikini area with crappy products, hopefully someone who is a professional will do a better job!!

  • I just trim with a small pair of scissors and then shave my bikini area, but that's becoming difficult. I'll probably have DH help me. He was great when I needed to shave my legs and was in a full leg brace.

I have done absolutely nothing.  Eventually the hair "down there" and the hair that's somehow sprung up around my belly-button will be long enough to braid together, and I will use this as a belt.

  • I use an electric trimmer on a regular basis.  But, for vacations and special occasions I've gotten a brazillian. I also typically get my underarms waxed anytime we have to go to a wedding or go on vacation.

We went on vacation 2 weeks ago and I made an appt for an underarm & bikini wax.  Thankfully, she did the underarms first.  Normally, it barely hurts at all and only takes a minute (literally).  But, this time it was AWFUL.  I was bruised afterward and she couldn't get all the hair (had a bunch of strays).  She said that most pregnant women's skin changes during pregnancy, but she's never seen bruising.  I've never had a reaction before and I'm taking instant purple across my entire armpit.  And it hurt like a BIATCH.  We both decided a bikini wax was NOT going to happen.  My bruises weren't as noticeable after 3 days and the pain went away after 2.  But, it was so not worth it.

So, if you are thinking of waxing for the first time during your pregnancy, I would just be cautious.
