Big boy on board!

Today I had a u/s where they averaged the head, belly, and femur to determine that my 36week IVF baby is measuring 8lbs9oz (39weeks). This was confirmed by fundal height and crown-rump palpation by the MW. So at my appointment next wednesday (with the OB) they're going to discuss scheduling either an induction or a c-section because carrying him to term could be problematic for LO and/or me. I was surprised that my usually conservative MW gave this her blessing. And I am relieved that there's an end in sight. I am exhausted and uncomfortable.

I'm just glad I have only 4 days of work left before maternity leave.

  • Not trying to burst your bubble but I would be careful about doing an induction or c-section for size purposes.  U/S's this late in the game can be way off.  If you read my posts from a couple days ago I had an U/S where they were off by almost 2lbs, they didn't measure the baby correctly because of the position he was in.

Same. My Sister was induced a year ago because they thought my Nephew was over 9 pounds. He was just over 7 pounds.

  • My u/s with Baby #1 was dead on (I know everyone's different, though). They said he was about 10 and 1/2 pounds and he was 10lb, 8oz. Glad for the c-section! Your doc will know what's best for you!

  • Ditto pp I wouldn't induce or do a c/s solely due to size.  There'd have to be something else medically indicating it was the way to go.

     I agree!

  • I agree w/ pp's, dd was estimated to be upper 8-low 9 lb range the last couple of weeks & my mw was concerned she would be too big. she was born 2 days before her due date at a perfectly average 7 lb 6 oz.  I would be cautious of a scheduled cs for estimated size alone.

  • Being completely blunt, that is a terrible reason to induce or schedule a c section.  Unless there are medical complications, that is a bad idea.  Not that I agree with it, but if you want to do it just because, just say so, but using growth estimates is not a reason.

  • If I read the original post correctly, it sounds like the induction was a dr's decision not hers and the midwife agreed as well. This leads me to believe that they feel there is a medical reason to do this and that she's not doing it just to have her baby. I understand the risks involved, but too many people are too quick to judge when it comes to the other soon-to-be moms' delivery decisions. The dr's job is to keep that baby and mom safe, why question them.

     Good luck with everything!!

Well you're quick to judge too because in my response I NEVER stated that the OP just wanted to have her baby.  I gave an example of how my U/S....which was double checked by a 20 year OBGYN expert.....was done incorrectly causing the measurements to be off and the estimated weight was almost 2lbs off.

My doctor, not the one who did the u/s, thought something was fishy about the measurements so they had the U/S place re-do the measurements and sure enough the one done before was WRONG.

I was cautioning the OP about doing the induction or c-section just based on measurements since they can be very inaccurate this late in the game and was never rude  or judging her in any way.  So ya you can get off your high horse now.

Edit: Also OP after reading your response below mine, I have to say that there was only 1 post where someone questioned you doing it for the wrong reason.  Everyone else was very polite in their post so if you took what we had to say offensively then you have really thin skin.

THANK YOU. Wow, I didn't realize that my MW followed by my OB making arrangements for me after 37 weeks would cause people to question my decision-making as if I'm directing them.

  • chouli, in my experience reading your posts you have been really considerate, questioning, informed and involved in your pregnancy experience.  As long as YOU feel comfortable with your medical provider's advice- that is the important thing.  If you have any reservations, don't hesitate to seek a second professional opinion.

Sending sparkles and support your way!  So exciting to know that LO will be here soon! Keep us posted :)

  • I would support the doctors decsion. If the baby is measuring that big at 36 weeks, there is a chance that coming out his shoulders could get stuck which can create a huge problem for the baby. OB's generally take the results and enter it into a computer system with the mothers weight pre-preganancy, and then calculate the risk of the baby getting "stuck" or having a difficult entrance. Ultrasounds are not perfect, should not be disregarded.

Thanks, so much. The OBs office I go to has 5 OBs and a MW. I have met w/ all of them and trust them a lot. But I will go to my next appt with a list of questions about my options. I think its important to remember that nothing will be decided until I'm 37.5 weeks and likely nothing would be done until 38 weeks. If he's as big as he measures (both internally and externally) then I don't think 38 weeks is unreasonable or unsafe. I will definitely not be making the decision on my own, nor is the MW. She made it clear that its all up to one of the OBs.

Agreed, 38 weeks is generally considered full term. Maybe you'll even go into labor before then on your own, who knows? Good luck with everything!
