Sleep Training with Paci

We are starting sleep training tonight, i read Sleep Easy Solution and i can't find in the book if it says to put them down with a paci or not. And then when you do the check in's do you shh and pat and put the paci back in or not?

Just wondering if anyone has done sleep training (any method) with a paci and it has been successful?

Re: Sleep Training with Paci

  • Personally I think ST is a great opportunity to stop the paci. Otherwise you will have to likely re ST when you do ditch it.

Sleep Easy recommends that you ditch the paci while you train.  No paci at all for sleeping, not even when you lay them down.  Also, for check ins, you don't touch them, no patting, no paci in.

I walked in his room close enough so he could see me, but not so close that I would be able to reach out and touch him.  I'd say "J, mommy and daddy are here, we love you, but it's time to go to sleep" and walk out.

We did it around 5 months (he was waking about 8 times a night), and it did work...until he got sick, and I gave him his paci back because he was so miserable, nothing else would console him.

  • Thanks! DS was STTN until he got his two bottom teeth, now he's a mess. I will try without the paci.

Does your LO still sttn with his paci since you gave it back?

  • Thanks so much! Do you put LO down awake with paci or asleep? One of our biggest problems is that DS doesn't go down awake and i can't even keep him awake during his last bottle because he dropped his last nap of the day.

I will def let you know how it goes!!

agreed!! the whole purpose of sleep training is to teach LO to self soothe.  giving them a paci is giving them a mixed message b/c you are still providing a sleep aid. I bet it will take you 2x as long w/ 2x as many tears if you keep giving it.

  • I did Sleep easy training and it worked wonders. We didn't use it until he could put it in his own mouth. So in the beginning we did not, but we do now. At this point LO sleeps through the night and if he wakes up he grabs his binky himself. Good luck
  • I had one twin in love with the paci and one that just used it for sleep. C who used it just for sleep, would spit it out an then get real upset until you put it back in. When we sleep trained at 5 months with him, we just cut it off cold turkey. E, who loves the paci, is chill without it at night once he falls asleep and wasn't giving us any trouble with it, so we let him keep it.
