High Chairs - how important is reclining?

Hello!  I'm shopping for a high chair for my four month old son, and I'm torn between the high chair I really love, the Boon Flair, and the high chair I just like, the Peg Perego Siesta.  I'm leaning towards the Siesta because it seems much more functional and I like how it reclines, which is the main drawback on the Flair.

So my question is for you mamas that are already using a high chair or have with previous children, how important is it to have a chair that reclines if it's not for a newborn?  Or if anyone has any experience with either of these chairs I would love to hear from you as well, thanks!

Re: High Chairs - how important is reclining?

  • Same here...my DD actually hated our first reclining high chair, so we ended up with an upright one and never looked back.  She much preferred the straight up one with no recline!

  • I would say at this age LOs would much rather sit up. If they eating they should be sitting up. If they are hanging out at the table they'd much rather be looking around. I never found the reclining necessary.

  • I never used the recline pOsition unless I was trying to give him medicine. I used hid bouncer chair to feed him cereal and purees until he was 5 months and then moved him to the high chair where I just left it upright.

  • I've never had a reclining high chair. By the time I used a high chair, all my dks were sitting up to feed, so it wasn't a necessary feature. I really like the Boon Flair, had we not been on our last, I may have considered it. I got the Ikea Antilop instead.

  • Our high chair can recline but I never used that feature.  We didn't start solids until 6 months and the upright setting is all we've ever needed.

Ditto all PP. We have a wooden high chair so we can't recline, only can sit upright. If you are feeding solids they shouldn't be reclined anyway, they need to be upright othrwise chocking hazard.  DS started solids at 5 months old and used our high chair.  If baby is getting a bottle, I prefer the cuddling anyway.

I'll play devils advocate. I got the recline feature because of the layout of our house. LO will recline in it while I am in the kitchen cooking.

Im a ftm and don't have a high chair yet, but my sister is a mother of 3 and puts her child (1-4 months) in the high chair and reclines while making dinner or while they are eating and pulls them up to the table. Once they get older and actually eat in the high chair she doesn't use the recline as much, but she told me to definitely get one with a recline.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback, I'm still not quite sure what I'm going to do, but I feel a lot more educated than I did before.  The reason I wanted the reclining feature was more for hanging out in the kitchen with me than for when I was actually feeding him, but it sounds like most people don't really end up using the chairs for that purpose.

Thanks again for all your input!

  • Reclining all the way! And the Siesta is a WAY better high chair than the Flair. I've had experience with both.

I've ever understood why any of them recline...  Ours does but I've never used that feature.
