I really am going to try to make this as short as possible. So there is a new weightloss research place that opened in our nearby hospital. Months ago I tried to get on but had not luck. So today they called me, and come to find out they are not only interested in me but my husband as well. It will be tricky with his schedule but I'm sure we can work it out. You do it for 12 weeks, with only 8 of those week being the diet. You have 6 shakes a day with a Lean cuisine for dinner. I am fine with this as I really want to lose the weight and if anything I think this will be the motivation we need to get healthy. Not to mention I am sure by the time it is said and done soda, fast food, unhealthy food will not be a taste we will like much.
Here is the thing though, during the time that we have to be doing the diet, for 4 of those days we are supposed to be going out of town to North Carolina to see my grandfather which will include chili cheese dogs, barbeque and just good food (however I am okay with giving it up). My mother who trys 5 million weightloss things, and sticks with them for maybe 10 minutes had some things to say about me giving this stuff up for this study. The thing is I think my health is more important, as is my husbands health. Then not to mention the money. It's important I think I should inform you that we would be getting paid $1575 each.
When I asked my sister what she thought, she said that no matter what this trip is going to have some problem. We know my mother, she has to have things on her schedule and normally there is always something with her and being stuck in a car with her for multiple days is sure to cause something. The last trip my sister made with her she swore she would never do again, yet she is again. LOL. Either way, my point is, her advice was to do it, that she may not be able to eat that stuff either because she has horrible morning sickness. So she said if I do have to do the diet, my mom will probably complain that we have to accomodate me having to get lean cuisine meals for dinner (you can have veggies and some other simple stuff during the day but it is a strict diet) but she will likely complain about that if I do it. If I choose not to go to avoid all the issues she will complain about that, and if I don't do the study at all, there will likely be something anyway. At least if it's because of the diet, it's a good cause and she can really only say so much.
So I guess my question's are these.
Should I do the study, and cancel doing it just because of the food?
Should I cancel it just because of my mom?
And if you all think I should do the diet and just go on the trip, does anyone have any suggestions for carrying a lean cuisine up there and getting them while we are there since she will be the one driving (maybe I am just drawing a blank because I know I am going to get crap either way)? Because we will be driving the first night, and the last night, so it will be an on the road sort of thing. I could bug her to stop at 7-11 and use the microwave there.
To share the last thing. I don't mind being honest with my mom, and I also don't mind standing up for myself, I just don't care to be stuck on this trip with us pissed at eachother. I also don't care to have her running her mouth in front of my family and making a big deal out of it that when we go to dinner we have to have veggies or something of that sort.
I am so sorry it was so long and thank you for any advice.
Re: NBR: Weightloss Research I Need Advice (Long)
I wouldn't cancel it because of your mom.
If you want to do it and think you could stick with it (minus those 4 days of uncertainty) I would absolutely do it. Lose weight and get paid! How great
Typically I try to eat healthy, and on the norm I forget to eat a lot. I get so busy and then it gets like 5:00 pm and I realize I had not eaten anything at all during the day, probably worse than if I just ate horribly. So I don't think I would bite her head off (going based off of how I am when I forget to eat), but her and I tend to have issues either way. I guess the hopes of losing weight, getting healthy and financially is what draws me to it, but at the same time my grandfather is not in the best of health, has never met DS and I can not imagine not going on this trip.
I have never had shakes before though, so I don't know much about them, it seems you know more than I do, and if it is that bad, then I may need to reconsider.
I currently am on a shake program (two a day with sensible snacks and dinner) that I love it has worked great I am not hungry and i still get to eat what I want and make the shakes any flavour I want and have lost 13lbs and 8.5inches in my first 5 weeks now I am not going to promote this here as you are not asking about what diet to do.
However if its something you can do together and get paid for and can back eachother up I say go for it you have nothing to lose as for the trip it will be tough can you maybe change your shake and meal around so that you can drink the shakes while your driving and have the meal before or after driving.....
I am going to engalnd in June for my mothers wedding, I am a bridesmaid she already got me the dress when I told her I was on my diet she started to freak because she would need to buy another dress and as I am getting there close to the wedding and she thought I was crazy to be doing the end of my 90 days while on holiday....however now she sees im sticking to it and put my foot down and have been losing the weight she is very supportive. I think if you tell your family why and that you are doing this for you and yoru husband and not for them and its really not a big deal if they eat the BBQ and you have a shake, I would probably cheat a little myself and have a baby sized portion
Really I find people are negative because they dont want to see you succeed as it shows that they havent.
Sorry I have my son Crying at me and have lost my train of thought so will end it here and Hope that helps.....
i just wanted to add like PP said about shakes not always being filling the thing that gets me is I am on two and they are filling and makes me really full they are usually 8-12oz however your program has 6 which though they may not be filling by themselves eating six will have you eating every couple hours. I do agree LC isn't the healthiest but for a kick start at getitng healthy getting used to eating getting paid to do it I would jump at the chance and at least give it a go
This, 150%. Shakes and Lean Cusine meals will not make you healthy, as it is not a healthy diet. I am currently working with a personal trainer. I go to the gym 6 days a week (I have 2 kids, and it is hard, but I make no excuses and get there one way or another) and he has me on a diet. I have one protein shake a day, after working out, and he always says no more than one a day as shakes really aren't a replacement for food. I have only been at it 8 weeks and I look and feel great. The best part is, I am getting healthy in a way I know I can maintain. Shake diets will put all the weight back on as soon as you stop eating them constantly.
That being said, you are an adult and can decide for yourself, with the money offered it would be hard to refuse! As for the trip, decide what you feel will work best for you.
The diet wont necessarily teach you too eat right, but it will like you said, hopefully keep you from going back to fast food. We dont eat fast food. It makes things a bit challenging when we are out and about, but it will be a year in July.
If you want to do this as a jump start and for the money then go for it, but I would plan on adopting a new way of life after the study. Before I got pregnant with #2 we were doing the Paleo diet, which is anything that is not man made. My DH and I are the healthiest that we have ever been. However, my aversion to meat is so strong, that I have been eating pasta and other junk food. I feel it and am ready to get back to meat, veggies, and fruit. It is also nice because I can feed Avery exactly what I eat and do not have to prepare something else for him. He will grow up thinking that fruit is a sweet treat and I am 100% ok with that. I am not saying you have to do the Paleo diet, I am just suggesting that for the long run you plan to do something that everyone in the family can do. I would never give my son a protein shake. Pair that with exercise and you would be good to go.
I am assuming with a study they are not wanting you to exercise as the study is not about exercise and weight-loss, but about diet and weight-loss. I would guess the effects of working out would be difficult to measure unless you were working out in a controlled environment.
If I wasnt pregnant and DH and I could do the study together and make over $3000 we would do it in a heart beat. I believe you said it was done through a local hospital, so I am assuming it is medically supervised.
As far as the trip, I would have a talk up front with your mom about the dietary needs. If she isnt going to cooperate, could you drive separately?
