important stuff: Headband and bows on baby girls, define your position

Forget about FFacing and RR, or FormulaFing against BM, this is the real topic of controversy.

Define your position, be brave.

  • No and no.

  • I don't make her wear them at home, but she has a bow on if we are out and about.  DH and the manny make fun of me constantly.

This....(and also I am a huge Cardinals fan so I'm sure I'd agree with anything you say) :)

  • I like a tasteful bow.  I'm not a fan of the huge flowers or the crochet headbands.  NMS.
  • No and no, especially the giant bows all over Etsy.

  • I think they can be cute and they definitely don't need to be worn all the time. The ones that are super huge/sparkly/crazy looking just take away from the cuteness of the kid.
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
  • She hates anything in her hair. The only thing that keeps her hair out of her eyes and stays in are those ouchless mini bands. She rips out hairclips and bows.

But I am not a fan of wide headbands or huge bows. I just like tiny clips and bows.It would be cool if she did, too! :)

  • The normal sized ones I don't mind. The huge flowers and bows are ridiculous.

Fine on occasion. Ridiculous when all the time. And when oversized. My poor niece is never seen without some ginormous bow or flower on her head. Poor kid.

    +1 Yes

  • I am strongly against anything you put around a baby's head before she has suffiecient hair for a clip.  I hate those crochet things.  HATE.

I do however love the bows that clip into their hair.  Betsy wears a bow every day, like the one she's wearing in my siggy.  Most little girls do in this area.  It goes hand in hand with smocking and stuff.

  • Personally, I don't get it.

Then again, I have a boy and maybe I speak out of bitterness that there isn't a pointless accessory I can blow lots of money on.

  • Ok, here's mine. I've thought it long and hard (AKA, overthought)

Depends. If they are done right, they can be adorable, but when done wrong... oh my, trainwreck.

Here are my oh-so-important personal guidelines:

-If the bow, or headband sticks like a sore thumb from the little girl's head or it is placed right on top of the head, WRONG. These are good examples:

     image

    image

    image

Also a no: placing said embellishment too close to the forehead or in the actual forehead.

-If the bow/headband has a nice proportion and is used to the side of the head, adorable: here's and example:

    image

    image

Heck even a little bigger can be OK if done right (not crazy about the colors, but the placing is impecable)

Your siggy is a good example of bow placing and proportion done right.

I like reading your responses, because I suppose this is another one of those things that has a very strong regional influence. Here, a baby girl with no hair accesories at all is a strange sight. I've been making headbands like crazy ever since I learned this baby is a girl.

  • If they don't have hair, no to both.

IF they have hair, both are ok if tasteful. And by hair I mean enough to actually put a clip on and have it stay. Not a fan of headbands on any kid w/out enough hair to actually pull back w/ a headband (eg I dont like them on babies regardless of hair).

  • Honey Badger DO give a shiit about bows.  The Honey Badger's stance is

    NO BOWS.
    NO HEADBANDS.

AND I'LL EAT EVERY MUTHAFLUCKING LAST ONE OF THEM.

  • I brought outfits with matching hair accessories with me to the hospital to deliver her and she has worn a giant bow or flower in her hair every single day of her life, so you can probably guess my position on them.

Editing after reading the other responses to add in my defense that I was the mom of a boy for almost three years before DD was born,so when I found out that I was having a girl, I was just estatic about being able to dress her up and buy all the gorgeous girly stuff I had been eyeballing in the stores for years and couldn't buy.

Also, where I live the the bigger and more sparkly the better! No one bats an eye at the ginormousness of a hair bow or flower!  LOL

  • Before the baby has hair=no.  After=adorable. In DH's family, all the baby girls have the huge flowers and bows. I was happy I had a boy so I wouldn't have to explain why my baby wasn't wearing the stacks of them we would have been given. I think they look stupid, but I wouldn't tell them that!

  • imageepopp85:

The one in your siggy pic totally cute, stuff like that I'm cool with, never had them on DD but their cute on other kids.  The ones that look like you stuck a garter on the poor girl's head not cool, hideous.

I like small bows or flower barrets if they actually have hair otherwise I think they look silly.  Hence DD still doesnt wear them since she still doesnt have much hair and she wont keep one in anyway.

Hey can you link to the grey headband you posted that's frickin cute and if I can get DD to wear it I might just need to buy it.  Same thing with the last pic, again not loving the colors but can you link to the seller so I can see if they make something less crazy?

For the first, Pinterest links me to a blog, supposely to a tutorial, but I can't find it.

This is the seller of the last one:

You can find and insane amount of headbands on Etsy. If you are crafty, juts search for headband tutorials in Pinterest.

  • C hates anything on her head or in her hair, which is a shame because we have tons of cute little barrettes we've never been able to use.

Really, I'm fine with headbands and bows, even the big ones, as long as they look comfortable to wear (i.e., not scratchy, heavy, or hanging in the baby's eyes).

  • Love bows, headbands, flowers, all of it. And love them even more on bald babies. They really put a halt on all the people asking, "what's his name?"

  • They aren't my style, but when done right (a la Betsy, for example) they can be really cute.

The best I can do is get DD to keep a little clippie in her bangs to keep them out of her eyes. She has enough hair to do little piggies but she is just not having it.

  • Small bows and headbands almost always look cute. But DD would not keep headbands on long, and her hair is so fine and thin now that I have not been able to keep clips in. So we almost never have anything in her hair.

My dd wears a small bow to keep her bangs out of her eyes every day.

    Rarely do I like a headband, & I always hate huge bows/flowers

I really dislike the big headbands w/cranium sized flowers. We're trying to get ours to keep a barrette in her hair just to keep it out of her eyes but failing. ((shrugs))

Wink  I love them too.  And I feel your pain because I will have my son in an outfit with trucks or whatever on it and always people with the "pretty little girl."  Angry

This! Evie practically needs bows these days because her top hair is so long it falls into her eyes all day. And no, I'm not ready to cut it yet.
