Very Unsettling...And TMI

So, today I had an appointment with my OB.

I'm 37 weeks so she checked my cervix etc. Said I'm 2 cm dilated, cervix is super thin and baby's head is very low. Kind of what I expected to hear.

But, when she poked her fingers up there, blood came gushing out. No exaggeration.  Even she was surprised. She wasn't concerned but said it just took her by surprise. Ok, no big deal, I know blood is a part of childbirth. Now, here's the part I'm unsettled by...

When I got up from the bed/chair thing, I noticed that on the pad where I had been laying looked like what I imagined the mucus plug to look like, but in blood. Gross, I know. (Do you know what I mean, though? Kind of looked like a large booger or that kind of gelatinous discharge that came out with menstruation occasionally) I didn't say anything because I was naked, covered in blood and trying desperately to maintain some sort of dignity.  And, starting Saturday, I've been having kind of menstrual-like cramps and even more so after my appt.

What do you guys think? Does this sound like the start of labor? Gah, I'm just very confused....

  • Sounds like your mucus plug and what is called bloody show, though that is usually just a streak of blood.  She may have disrupted a blood vessel as well which isn't a big deal.  So it could be labor but you'll just want to keep an eye out for regular contractions and that kind of thing.  Good luck!

  • Yup, that was your mucus plug.  If that blood was just an irritated vessel like PP said, then the plug might regenerate.  But you're full term, so it might not :o)

  • yeah when they check you they can dislodge the MP.

Who knows, but you could go into labor within the week or so.

  • It sounds like your mucus plug, but losing your MP doesn't signify the start of labor.  It'll regenerate if your body isn't ready for labor yet.

  • Sounds like beginning stages of labor. You could stay like this for weeks before you go into the final stages, though. Sorry, I'm not sure if that helps or doesn't. No matter what - good luck!
