I havent talked with our worker yet, but does anyone foster and cloth diaper? I would think it wouldnt matter if we got an infant placement, but I wasnt sure how it would go over with a toddler. Just looking for insight.
Our social worker thought it was maybe a little strange (probably one of the many things we did that made him roll his eyes ), but certainly didnt have a problem with it. Both our babies came as infants so I dont have advice on transitioning a toddler who is used to sposies onto cloth, but I'd guess many wouldn't care that much.
The only special consideration we took was not to send them to visits in cloth diapers - for one, we never sent anything we would be upset about not coming back, but also we didnt want to seem *too* out there to bio mom or increase the already vast differences between our styles as part of our ongoing desire to create a good relationship with her. I also didnt want to take the chance that she'd have a problem with it.
Yes! We've used cloth on almost all of our placements, unless of couse they were potty trained already. I usually put them stright in cloth as soon as the disposable they came in needed changing, no complaints ever. Our sw's have dubbed us "the green family" because we use cloth, it's never been an issue to use it.
I supervise all of the visits with bio families so I keep the kids in cloth for visits too, bio family isn't allowed to change diapers in our county so I don't worry about the diapers getting tossed or ruined.
What diapers you use depends a lot on the LO you are caring for, some fit better than others. I really like the versatility of Best Bottoms covers with a soaker of some sort but I also have Grovia's, BumGenius 4.0's, Kawaii, Blueberry, Thirstie's covers, and a ton of prefolds.
In our state--many day care centers that take state funding will also cloth diaper. State rules say you must change plastic part (if using prefolds & a cover). No big deal.
Ditto CT--we use disposables for visits (and some other times) but that's no biggie. We've still saved a TON of money.
I don't think most kids would have a problem switching. Although, for our emergency placements, we just ended up using sposies.
All-in one size diapers (Kawaii have the best prices I've found) are nice to have on hand. Probably won't work for newborns. I have a pack of each size sposies on hand as well.
Just as an FYI... we were using cloth with our little ones... then accidently forgot to change them back into disposables for one of the visits. Now bio parents have "requested" that we not use cloth at all. She was worried it would impede movement since they were bulky. We could talk things out with her if we wanted, try to show her that there are many options, but since it looks like we will only have the kids for a few more months before they return home we decided it wasn't worth the battle. Frustrating though!

And I was going to say--check out daycares now. The sooner the better. Cloth may not be your deciding factor, but many have long wait lists.
