Ultrasound movement at 8 1/2 weeks?

Hi there.  Hoping you can put my mind at ease a bit.

With my first two boys, at early ultrasounds (like 6 weeks plus), both kids were moving all over the place in the ultrasounds.  Dancing, swimming, basically just rocking and rolling.

The doc is saying everything is normal with this baby, and I can see a great, strong heartbeat.  The baby is so still.  It basically just hangs out in one place, with a heartbeat in the middle.

On the one hand, I am thinking maybe this will be a calm, mellow girl or something, but on the other, I just am wondering if the baby CAN move?

I also kind of think the ultrasound machines at this office might not be as good. It seems like the image is more grainy than I remember the others being and we definitely can't see as much detail as the others.

What kind of movement are you seeing at this point?   Any help would be great... just a weird, hard day (see other post) as we also found out today we lost one of our twins...

  • I am sorry about your loss.  I am sure this baby is fine.  If your doctor didn't seemed concerned don't let yourself get to worked up over it.  I bet he/she is just going to be cool, calm, and collected and when it's born you will be so grateful!

  • I had an u/s on Monday and there was movement. The nurse and dr both seemed slightly surprised...as in that doesn't happen to everyone.

Try to relay. I'm sure everything is fine.

  • I had a u/s at 8 weeks 1 day and there was a strong heartbeat (171) but nope my little bean wasn't moving around. It stayed in mostly the same place the whole time for like 15 min. The tech didn't say anything about it and when the doctor called to follow up on it, they didn't mention anything either. I wouldn't worry if it has a strong little heartbeat and is measuring on time it is doing great!!

  • Im so sorry about the loss of one of your LO...

I had an u/s at 8wk 3d, and I FREAKED out because LO wasn't moving either. We were able to see his heartbeat, which was reassuring, but I too had never seen an u/s where the baby didnt move...My last U/S at 19wks, we found out that LO was a very active boy and dancing all around....I asked and the U/S tech mentioned that it may not be the case...but the LO's do go through periods of sleep...where they just chill out.

T & P are with you for the loss of your LO...but stay positive on this one....Hopefully all turns out okay!

  • I had an u/s at 8 wks...baby stayed stationary. I assumed that was normal, since no one said anything, and its my first. But baby was hiding wayyyyy at the top of my uterus, and they were having a hard time getting clear measurements...I did all the wiggling, to try and get a better pic!

  • Thanks all.  I really am focusing on our little baby too!

I just watched a bunch of 8 week ultrasounds on youtube and those babies were mellow, mellow.  I was also right about the grainy quality of the machine out our docs office.   Whew it stinks! lol

     I feel better and thanks!

  • I had mine last week at 8 weeks and there really wasn't much movement.  With my son I had probably 6 ultrasounds between 6 and 14 weeks and only after 12 weeks could we really detect much movement.  I mean at 6 weeks he was a blob with a little flicker in the middle and at 9 weeks he was a little gummy bear with nubs for arms and legs.  I am really surprised you saw a lot of vigorous movement at 6 weeks with your other pregnancies.  Everything sounds completely normal to me.

  • With my first pregnancy, he didn't move much until the 20 week ultrasound. ?Don't worry about it, as long as the hb is OK!
  • I read in my pregnancy book last night that the baby starts moving their limbs and body during the 9th week.
